In a significant judgment aimed at police reforms, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to set up a Police Establishment Board and ensure a fixed tenure, transparent appointment, and promotion process for the Director General of Police (DGP). The directive came during the hearing of the case Raveena vs State of Himachal Pradesh.
The court emphasized the need to enhance accountability within the police force and instructed the state to implement structural reforms. These include clearly defining the police’s accountability, separating investigation duties from law and order responsibilities, and ensuring that the police function with greater responsibility towards the law and the public.
The High Court’s order marks a crucial step towards implementing long-standing recommendations for police modernization and better governance.
