Collaboration aims to strengthen circular economy, support EPR framework, and convert used oil into re-refined base oil for sustainable automotive practices.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Tata Motors have announced a strategic partnership to develop a structured ecosystem for the collection, transportation, and recycling of used automotive lubricants in India. The initiative aims to support the country’s circular economy goals and strengthen the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

The collaboration focuses on promoting sustainable industrial practices and improving resource efficiency across the automotive sector.

Strengthening Circular Economy and EPR Compliance

The partnership is designed to create a scalable system for the safe handling of used lubricants in line with India’s evolving EPR regulations.

By ensuring proper collection and recycling of used oil, the initiative aims to reduce environmental pollution and promote responsible waste management practices within the automotive ecosystem.

Officials said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Used Oil to Be Converted into Re-Refined Base Oil

Under the initiative, collected used automotive lubricants will be processed into high-quality re-refined base oil.

This process is expected to enhance resource efficiency, reduce dependency on virgin raw materials, and minimize the environmental impact associated with lubricant disposal.

The move also supports the development of a circular value chain in the automotive industry.

Focus on Safe Collection and Scalable Infrastructure

The collaboration between HPCL and Tata Motors will establish a structured framework for:

  • Safe collection of used automotive lubricants
  • Efficient transportation systems
  • Advanced recycling and re-refining processes
  • Scalable infrastructure aligned with sustainability goals

The initiative is expected to improve accountability and streamline waste oil management across the sector.

Step Towards Cleaner and Greener Automotive Sector

The partnership marks a significant step towards adopting environmentally responsible practices in India’s automotive industry.

It is aimed at reducing ecological impact while promoting innovation in recycling technologies and sustainable resource use.
