Kolkata: The West Bengal Government has appointed senior IAS officer Dr Krishna Gupta (IAS: 1991: WB), currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary, Co-operation Department, as the next State Election Commissioner (SEC) of West Bengal.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday and will come into effect after Dr Gupta superannuates from the Indian Administrative Service on June 30, 2026. He will assume charge as the State Election Commissioner under Article 243K(1) of the Constitution of India and the provisions of the West Bengal State Election Commission Act, 1994.
The State Election Commission is the constitutional authority responsible for conducting elections to Panchayats, Municipalities and other Urban Local Bodies across the state.
Appointment Under Constitutional Provisions
According to the official notification, Dr Krishna Gupta has been appointed as the State Election Commissioner in accordance with Article 243K(1) of the Constitution, which empowers states to appoint an independent authority to supervise, direct and control local body elections.
As SEC, he will play a critical role in ensuring the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections to rural and urban local bodies across West Bengal.
