Who Is IFS Officer Ngulkham Jathom Gangte? Senior Diplomat Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Mexico

Senior IFS officer Gangte, currently Special Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Mexico, bringing over three decades of diplomatic experience across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Ngulkham Jathom Gangte (1994 batch) as the next Ambassador of India to Mexico. Currently serving as Special Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Gangte is expected to take up his new diplomatic assignment shortly.

A seasoned diplomat with more than three decades of experience, Gangte has represented India in key diplomatic missions across Africa, Europe, North America and the Middle East, besides holding several important positions at the MEA headquarters.

Appointment as Ambassador to Mexico

The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Tuesday that Ngulkham Jathom Gangte, presently serving as Special Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Mexico.

The appointment marks another significant milestone in his distinguished diplomatic career spanning over 30 years.

Distinguished Diplomatic Career

Mr Gangte joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and has served in several Indian missions abroad in diverse diplomatic and administrative roles.

His overseas postings include:

  • Cairo, Egypt
  • Rabat, Morocco
  • Dublin, Ireland
  • Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania
  • Chicago, United States

These assignments provided him extensive experience in bilateral relations, consular affairs, trade promotion, and engagement with the Indian diaspora.

Leadership Roles at the MEA

At the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters in New Delhi, IFS Gangte has held several key assignments.

Between 2006 and 2008, he served as Deputy Secretary and Director in the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) Division, handling strategic regional affairs.

He later became Joint Secretary at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS), where he played an important role in training and capacity building of Indian diplomats.

Currently, he serves as Special Secretary (Establishment) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

High Commissioner to Zambia, Ambassador to Tunisia and Libya

Mr Gangte has also headed several Indian diplomatic missions.

He served as:

  • High Commissioner of India to Zambia (2017–2021)
  • Ambassador of India to Tunisia (2021–2024)
  • Concurrent Ambassador to Libya, with residence in Tunis

During these assignments, he worked to strengthen India’s bilateral relations, trade cooperation, development partnerships and diplomatic engagement across Africa.

Acting DDG of Indian Council of World Affairs

On January 6, 2026, IFS Gangte assumed charge as the Acting Deputy Director General (DDG) of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) while continuing his responsibilities in the Ministry of External Affairs.

The ICWA is India’s premier foreign policy think tank that promotes research and dialogue on international relations.

Education and Personal Profile

IFS Gangte completed his early education at Tadong Primary School before pursuing senior secondary education at Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Chemistry.

He is fluent in English, Hindi and Arabic, skills that have supported his diplomatic engagements across multiple regions.

Apart from diplomacy, Gangte enjoys outdoor sports and regularly plays tennis, table tennis and football. He is married to Mrs. Hatmuonkim Gangte.

A Career Spanning Continents

From serving in diplomatic missions across Africa, Europe, North America and the Middle East to leading important divisions at the Ministry of External Affairs, Ngulkham Jathom Gangte has built a distinguished career in Indian diplomacy.

His appointment as India’s Ambassador to Mexico adds another significant chapter to a career dedicated to strengthening India’s global partnerships.
