New Delhi: The Government of India has approved the extension of deputation tenure of Rushal Garg, an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer currently serving as Under Secretary (ED) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The extension has been granted with the sanction of the President, allowing Garg to continue in his present role for a further period of one year, up to April 17, 2027. The extension will be governed by the standard terms and conditions of deputation as prescribed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Tenure and Deputation Details
IFS Garg has been on deputation to the MEA since April 18, 2024. With this latest approval, he will continue to serve in the ministry for an extended duration, contributing to key administrative and policy functions.
The order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority within the ministry.

Professional Background
An officer of the 2018 batch of the Indian Forest Service, Rushal Garg secured All India Rank 58 in the Indian Forest Service Examination conducted in 2017.
He is an engineering graduate from Thapar University and began his professional career as a business analyst in Bengaluru, where he worked for two years before entering the civil services.
Belonging to the AGMUT cadre, Garg has also been noted for his participation in high-level meetings in Delhi, representing Jammu & Kashmir cadre officers in his capacity as Under Secretary.
Public Recognition and Personal Life
Beyond his professional achievements, Rushal Garg gained public recognition as the husband of Mohita Sharma, an IPS officer who became the second crorepati winner on the popular television show Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2020.
The couple married in 2019. Mohita Sharma has often credited him as the inspiration behind her participation in the show, noting that appearing on KBC had long been his dream.
Role in MEA
As Under Secretary (ED) in the MEA, Garg is involved in handling key assignments related to external affairs administration. His continued tenure is expected to provide stability and continuity in ongoing responsibilities within the ministry.
