Following the announcement of a U.S.-mediated ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, Indian Foreign Secretary Mr. Vikram Misri held a press conference in New Delhi on May 10 to confirm the terms of the agreement. He stated that the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan contacted his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM IST, and both sides agreed to a cessation of all hostilities—across land, air, and sea—effective from 5:00 PM IST the same day.

During the briefing, Mr. Misri emphasized India’s principled commitment to de-escalation, while underlining that this peace is conditional upon Pakistan’s adherence to the agreement and cessation of all hostile actions, including cross-border terrorism. He also noted that military-to-military engagements are scheduled in the coming days to ensure the durability of the ceasefire and explore additional confidence-building measures.
The ceasefire follows a period of heightened tensions and was made possible through sustained diplomatic efforts led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, with additional backing from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
However, Indian defence officials made it clear that the ceasefire does not equate to complacency. Participating in the same press briefing, Commodore Raghu R. Nair underscored India’s military preparedness, stating:
“In conclusion, let me reiterate that while we will adhere to the understanding reached today, the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force remain fully prepared, ever vigilant, and committed to defending the sovereignty and integrity of the motherland. Every misadventure by Pakistan has been met with strength and any future escalation will be met with a decisive response. We remain fully operationally ready to undertake any operations required in defence of the nation.”

The ceasefire, while a welcome development, comes amid lingering regional tensions and recent escalations, including aerial and missile exchanges. As such, both governments, as well as international observers, are expected to keep a close watch on the ground situation in the coming days.
