India’s coal industry has maintained a strong growth trajectory, with both production and dispatch witnessing steady increases between April 2024 and January 2025.
In January 2025 alone, total coal production reached 104.43 million tonnes (MT), reflecting a 4.38% rise from 100.05 MT in the same period last year. A significant boost came from Captive, Commercial, and Other Entities, which recorded a production surge of 31.07%, reaching 19.68 MT compared to 15.01 MT in the previous year.
On a cumulative scale, coal production up to January 2025 stood at 830.66 MT, marking a 5.88% increase from 784.51 MT in the corresponding period last year.
Coal dispatch has also seen a corresponding rise, with total dispatch for January 2025 reaching 92.40 MT—6.31% higher than 86.92 MT recorded last year. Dispatch from Captive and Other Entities climbed 29.94%, reaching 17.72 MT compared to 13.64 MT in the same period last year. The cumulative dispatch up to January 2025 reached 843.75 MT, showing a 5.73% increase over 798.02 MT recorded in the previous year.
The Ministry of Coal continues to focus on enhancing productivity, ensuring a stable energy supply, and bolstering economic growth through sectoral improvements.
