Indore: The blueprint for the proposed Indore–Ujjain Metropolitan Region (UIMR) in Madhya Pradesh has been prepared, marking a significant step toward one of the state’s most ambitious urban development initiatives. The plan is expected to take shape within the next year and aims to integrate 6 districts, 38 tehsils, and 2,781 villages, covering a population of nearly 85–90 lakh (9 million) people.
A Mega Regional Development Vision for Malwa
The UIMR project is designed as a comprehensive regional development model that goes beyond urban expansion. It aims to unify development across key sectors including industry, investment, transport, agriculture, tourism, employment, and urban infrastructure.
Experts believe the initiative could transform the Malwa region into one of India’s major economic clusters, making it a potential game-changer for Madhya Pradesh’s economy.
Six Districts to Be Integrated Under UIMR
According to the preliminary report, the proposed metropolitan region will include:
- Indore
- Ujjain
- Dewas
- Dhar
- Shajapur
- Ratlam
The total area under the plan will span over 16,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest proposed regional development zones in the state.
Indore will be fully included in the project, while nearly 90% of Shajapur district will also come under the regional framework.
Next Phase: Situation Analysis Report in 2.5 Months
After the completion of the initial blueprint, the next step will be the preparation of a Situation Analysis Report within approximately 2.5 months.
This study will evaluate around 50 sectors, including:
- Roads and transport infrastructure
- Education and healthcare
- Agriculture and water resources
- Industry and investment potential
- Police, public health engineering (PHE), and environmental zones
This report will play a key role in shaping future development strategies for the region.
Investment and Development Roadmap to Follow
Following the situation analysis, authorities will prepare a Regional Development and Investment Plan.
This long-term roadmap will define:
- Priority infrastructure projects
- Industrial development zones
- Transport and logistics networks
- Employment generation strategies
- Investment attraction policies
The plan will focus on balanced and integrated growth across all six districts.
Major Focus on Road Infrastructure and Expressways
The UIMR blueprint places strong emphasis on improving connectivity through major road projects, including:
- Indore–Bhopal Greenfield Expressway
- Indore–Ujjain Greenfield Expressway
- Ujjain–Maksi Corridor
- Ujjain–Javra Corridor
- Proposed eastern and western bypasses in Indore
These projects are expected to significantly enhance logistics efficiency and industrial movement in the region.
Railway Network Expansion Planned
Rail connectivity will also be strengthened under the metropolitan development framework. Existing routes such as Nagda–Ujjain, Ujjain–Maksi, and Ujjain–Dewas–Mhow already provide strong connectivity.
Future proposed railway expansions include:
- Tihi–Dhar
- Dhar–Dahod
- Dhar–Jobat
- Mhow–Manmad
- Mangaliya–Budhni
These expansions are expected to improve regional integration and support economic growth.
Economic Impact: Investment, Industry, and Employment Growth
Experts believe the project could significantly boost:
- Industrial investment
- Real estate development
- Logistics and trade
- Large-scale employment generation
The integration of Indore’s industrial base, Ujjain’s religious tourism, Dewas’s manufacturing strength, and Ratlam’s trading ecosystem is expected to create a unified economic growth model for the region.
Expected Transformation Within a Year
Officials estimate that the initial structure of the UIMR will become clearly visible within one year. After this, the process will move toward DPR preparation, surveys, and project approvals.
If implemented on schedule, the Indore–Ujjain Metropolitan Region could emerge as one of India’s most significant regional development models, reshaping the economic future of Madhya Pradesh.
