New Delhi: Indian Navy warship INS Trishul arrived at Toulon, France, on September 22 to participate in the 24th edition of Exercise Varuna, the bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and French Navy.

The exercise will include professional engagements both at harbour and at sea, providing personnel from the two navies an opportunity to exchange operational experiences and strengthen coordination.

Naval Engagements at Harbour and Sea

Exercise Varuna 2026 will feature a range of activities, including cross-deck visits, operational interactions and sporting engagements.

These activities are designed to provide opportunities for the two navies to share experiences and best practices. The engagements will also support greater interoperability, allowing personnel from both sides to better understand each other’s procedures and operational practices.

The exercise will combine professional interaction with opportunities for personnel to engage beyond formal operational activities.

Strengthening India-France Maritime Cooperation

INS Trishul’s visit to Toulon comes as part of the broader maritime engagement between India and France.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the visit reflects the enduring maritime partnership between the two countries and the expanding scope of their naval cooperation.

Regular bilateral exercises such as Varuna provide a platform for the two navies to interact, exchange operational knowledge and build greater mutual understanding.

Focus on Interoperability

A key element of the exercise is improving interoperability between the Indian and French navies.

Through operational interactions and professional exchanges, personnel can share experiences and learn from each other’s practices. Such engagements help build familiarity between the two forces and support coordinated maritime operations.

The inclusion of both harbour and sea activities also gives participating personnel opportunities to interact in different operational settings.

A Continuing Naval Partnership

Exercise Varuna is part of the continuing defence and maritime engagement between India and France. The 24th edition in Toulon provides another platform for the two navies to deepen professional interaction and strengthen their understanding of maritime operations.

The participation of INS Trishul also highlights the Indian Navy’s ongoing engagement with partner navies through bilateral exercises.

The exercise is expected to contribute to closer India-France maritime ties while giving naval personnel opportunities to exchange knowledge, practices and operational experience.
