New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of deputation tenure of senior IPS officer Anurag Garg (IPS:1993:HP) as Director General (DG) of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) till July 31, 2027, i.e., the date of his superannuation.
According to the official order, Garg’s tenure as DG of the country’s premier anti-narcotics agency has been extended beyond his earlier approved term ending May 23, 2026. The extension reflects the Centre’s continued confidence in his leadership at a time when India is intensifying its crackdown on international drug trafficking networks and narco-terrorism.
Extension Approved Till Superannuation
Anurag Garg was appointed Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau on September 17, 2024. He had replaced Anish Dayal Singh, who was then holding additional charge of the post along with responsibilities as Director General of the CRPF.
With the latest approval by the ACC, Garg will now continue to head the NCB until his retirement on July 31, 2027.
Senior IPS Officer from Himachal Pradesh Cadre
Anurag Garg is a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Over the course of his distinguished policing career, he has held several key assignments at both the state and central levels.
Born on July 13, 1967, Garg joined the IPS through the UPSC Civil Services Examination and initially served in various district policing and administrative roles in Himachal Pradesh. He later rose to senior leadership positions handling law and order, vigilance and anti-corruption operations.
One of his notable assignments in the state was serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (SVACB), Himachal Pradesh.
Experience in Border Security and National Security
Before taking over as DG of the NCB, Garg served on central deputation as Additional Director General (ADG) in the Border Security Force (BSF), where he gained significant experience in border management and national security operations.
His tenure in the BSF provided crucial exposure to trans-border criminal activities, including narcotics smuggling networks operating across sensitive international borders.
Focus on Anti-Drug Operations
Since assuming charge as DG NCB in September 2024, Garg has overseen several nationwide anti-drug operations and strengthened coordination among central agencies, state police units and international enforcement bodies.
Under his leadership, the NCB has intensified action against synthetic drug cartels, darknet-based narcotics networks and cross-border trafficking modules. The agency has also focused on awareness and rehabilitation initiatives, particularly in vulnerable border regions and drug-affected areas.
The extension of his tenure is being viewed as part of the Centre’s strategy to ensure continuity in anti-narcotics operations amid growing concerns over international drug trafficking and organized crime networks.
