New Delhi: The Central Government has announced a series of important appointments involving senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. Senior IPS officer Amit Kumar (IPS:1994:BH) has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Special Protection Group (SPG) and is slated to take over as Director, SPG after the completion of incumbent Alok Sharma’s (IPS:1991:UP) extended tenure on March 31, 2027.
In separate orders, IPS officers B Satya Yesubabu (IPS:2011:AP) and Anupam Sharma (IPS:2009:HP) have been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), respectively, on central deputation.
The appointments have been approved by the competent authority under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Amit Kumar Appointed OSD in SPG
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 30, 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Amit Kumar as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Special Protection Group.

His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
To facilitate his appointment, the government has temporarily upgraded one vacant post in the SPG to Level-16.
To Take Charge as SPG Director in 2027
Amit Kumar has been designated as the successor to Alok Sharma, who is currently serving as the Director, SPG.
Sharma was originally scheduled to retire on June 30, 2026, but the ACC approved a nine-month extension to his tenure on June 24, 2026, allowing him to continue in office until March 31, 2027.
Following the completion of Sharma’s extended tenure, Amit Kumar will formally assume charge as the Director of the Special Protection Group.
Who Is Amit Kumar?
A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, Amit Kumar is presently serving as Special Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
With over three decades of policing and security experience, he has held several important assignments in both the state police and central armed police forces.
His appointment to the SPG comes at a crucial time as the elite security force continues to modernise its protective capabilities.
Role of the Special Protection Group
The Special Protection Group (SPG) is India’s elite security force entrusted with providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and other designated protectees, as notified under the SPG Act.
The Director of SPG oversees one of the country’s most sensitive security organisations responsible for safeguarding the nation’s highest leadership.
B Satya Yesubabu Appointed DIG in CISF
In another significant appointment, B Satya Yesubabu (IPS:2011:AP) has been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on central deputation.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order issued on June 25, 2026, the appointment has been approved under the usual terms and conditions governing central deputation.
Current Posting
Before his central deputation, Yesubabu was serving as:
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Police Transport Organisation (PTO), Andhra Pradesh
With this appointment, he joins the CISF, which is responsible for securing airports, metro rail systems, critical infrastructure, public sector undertakings and other vital national assets.
Anupam Sharma Posted as DIG in ITBP
Similarly, Anupam Sharma (IPS:2009:HP) has been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
The appointment was approved by the competent authority through an MHA order dated June 27, 2026.
Current Assignment
Prior to his appointment, Sharma was serving as:
- Deputy Inspector General (Crime), State CID, Himachal Pradesh
He will now join the ITBP on central deputation under the standard terms and conditions applicable to such appointments.
