Puducherry: An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to the AGMUT cadre has been booked in a dowry harassment case in Puducherry following allegations made by his wife. The case has been registered against IPS officer R. Subash and his mother, Sulochana, after his wife accused them of demanding a house worth ₹50 lakh as dowry and subjecting her to harassment.
The All Women Police Station in Puducherry registered the case on Tuesday after completing the prescribed preliminary procedures, including an inquiry by the Dowry Prohibition Officer and authorisation from senior police officials.
Subash, 39, is originally from Keezharunai village in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district. He was inducted into the Indian Police Service earlier this year and is currently posted in Delhi.
The case has attracted attention because Subash was promoted to the IPS only a few months ago after serving in the Puducherry Police.
Who Is IPS R. Subash?
R. Subash is a 2021-batch Indian Police Service officer of the AGMUT cadre, inducted through the promotion quota in 2026.
He hails from Keezharunai village in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu and was serving in the Puducherry Police before his elevation to the IPS.

Prior to his induction, Subash held the position of Deputy Commandant in the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) of the Puducherry Police.

Career Before Joining the Indian Police Service
Before entering the IPS, Subash served in the police establishment of Puducherry.
One of his important assignments was as Deputy Commandant in the Indian Reserve Battalion of the Puducherry Police.
The Indian Reserve Battalion is part of the police and security establishment of the Union Territory and performs duties relating to law and order, security and other assigned policing responsibilities.
Subash was serving in this capacity when he married Arunya in 2024.
His career subsequently progressed through the promotion channel for eligible State Police Service officers.
Inducted Into IPS in June 2026 Along With 12 Other Officers
In June 2026, Subash was among 13 State Police Service officers approved for induction into the Indian Police Service under the Union Territory segment of the joint AGMUT cadre.
The induction was approved by the President of India through the prescribed appointment process.
Although Subash entered the IPS in 2026, he was allotted the 2021 batch under the promotion quota.
This distinction is important because his batch year represents the year assigned to him for IPS seniority purposes and not the calendar year in which he was formally inducted.
His elevation marked a significant development in his policing career after his earlier service in Puducherry.
Transferred From Puducherry to Delhi in July 2026
Following his induction into the IPS, Subash was transferred from Puducherry to New Delhi.
The transfer came as part of a wider reshuffle of AGMUT cadre officers carried out by the Ministry of Home Affairs in July 2026.
The reshuffle involved administrative transfers across different Union Territories and other jurisdictions served by AGMUT cadre officers.
Subash was among the officers moved out of Puducherry.
According to the available information, he is currently posted in Delhi. His precise present designation has not been specified in the reports concerning the dowry harassment case.
What Is the Dowry Harassment Case Against IPS R. Subash?
The controversy arose after Subash’s wife, Arunya, approached the authorities in Puducherry with allegations of dowry harassment.
Arunya, 36, is a postgraduate in Computer Technology and belongs to Nerinjipettai in Tamil Nadu.
She married Subash in 2024, when he was serving as Deputy Commandant in the Indian Reserve Battalion of the Puducherry Police.
According to her complaint dated July 11, 2026, her family had promised to provide 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery at the time of marriage.
However, she alleged that her family was able to provide only six sovereigns initially and assured the other side that the remaining jewellery would be given later.
Arunya claimed that the issue subsequently became a source of harassment in her matrimonial home.
Wife Alleges Demand for House Worth ₹50 Lakh
In her complaint, Arunya alleged that Subash and his mother, Sulochana, demanded a house worth ₹50 lakh as dowry.
She further accused them of subjecting her to harassment over the alleged demand.
According to the complaint, she was eventually sent back to her parental home.
The allegations concern both the alleged demand for a residential property and the earlier promise relating to gold jewellery.
These claims form the basis of the police case and remain allegations that are subject to investigation and the legal process.
Complaint Filed on July 11, Case Registered in October
Arunya submitted her complaint on July 11, 2026.
Following the complaint, the matter was examined through the relevant administrative and legal procedures.
The complaint was referred to the Dowry Prohibition Officer for an inquiry into the allegations.
After the officer submitted an inquiry report, the police obtained the necessary authorisation from senior officials.
The All Women Police Station in Puducherry subsequently registered a case against Subash and his mother on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The registration of the case came approximately three months after the original complaint.
The available report does not specify the penal sections invoked in the case or whether any arrest has been made.
IPS Officer and Mother Named in Police Case
The case names two individuals: IPS officer R. Subash and his mother, Sulochana.
Both have been accused by Arunya of demanding dowry and subjecting her to harassment.
The allegations will require examination through the investigation and judicial process.
The registration of a criminal case does not establish guilt, and no court finding against the accused has been reported in the information currently available.
The available material also does not include a response from Subash or his mother to the allegations.
Case Draws Attention Months After IPS Promotion
The development has brought Subash under scrutiny just months after his induction into the Indian Police Service.
He was promoted to the IPS in June 2026, transferred to Delhi in July and subsequently named in the dowry harassment case registered in Puducherry in October.
The case concerns allegations relating to his marriage in 2024, when he was serving in the Puducherry Police.
Further developments will depend on the police investigation, the evidence collected and any subsequent proceedings before the competent court.
As of the information available, the case has been registered, but the allegations against Subash and his mother have not been judicially established.
