Dehradun: In a major relief for Uttarakhand and other northern states, the long-pending Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project has finally moved forward after years of delay. A consensus has been reached between six states—Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan—paving the way for the long-awaited implementation of the ambitious project.
The breakthrough came following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where key decisions were taken to resolve long-standing disputes related to cost sharing, water distribution, and power generation.
Key Agreement Reached Between Six States
The project, which was stuck for several years due to disagreements among states, has now gained fresh momentum. The participating states have agreed in principle to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), after which the proposal will be placed before the Union Cabinet for final approval.
The Kishau Dam is proposed to be built on the Tons River, a major tributary of the Yamuna, located on the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
₹15,000 Crore Mega Project for Energy and Water Security
The Kishau Multipurpose Project is estimated to cost around ₹15,000 crore and is considered one of North India’s most important water and energy infrastructure initiatives.
The project aims to:
- Increase irrigation capacity in the Yamuna basin
- Improve drinking water supply
- Strengthen river flow management
- Expand hydropower generation
Authorities believe the project will play a crucial role in long-term regional development.
422 MW Hydropower Generation Capacity
The dam is expected to generate around 422 MW of hydroelectric power. Uttarakhand will receive its share of electricity, helping meet the state’s growing energy demand.
Officials say increased hydropower generation will also boost state revenue and strengthen energy security in the long run.
Major Relief in Project Funding Structure
A significant decision was also taken regarding project financing. The cost of the water component will be shared in a 90:10 ratio:
- 90% funded by the Central Government as central assistance
- 10% shared by the participating states
This arrangement is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on states and accelerate project implementation.
Boost to Irrigation, Drinking Water, and Agriculture
The project is expected to greatly enhance water availability in the Yamuna basin. Improved water storage will ensure supply even during dry seasons, benefiting agriculture and expanding irrigation facilities in several regions.
It will also help strengthen drinking water supply systems for growing populations in multiple states.
Environmental Benefits for Yamuna River
The Kishau Dam is also expected to support the ecological restoration of the Yamuna River. Regulated water flow will help maintain environmental flow, improve water quality, and benefit downstream populations.
Experts believe the project could play a key role in improving the overall health of the river ecosystem.
Uttarakhand Sees Kishau Project as a Game Changer
The Uttarakhand government views the Kishau project as a transformative initiative for the state. With rising electricity demand, agricultural needs, and future water requirements, the project is considered crucial for sustainable development.
After years of delays, the recent consensus has renewed hopes that construction work on the dam will begin soon, marking a major milestone in regional infrastructure development.
