Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has formed around 2,000 new dairy cooperative societies as the state steps up efforts to achieve Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav’s vision of making Madhya Pradesh the Milk Capital.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reviewed ongoing initiatives aimed at increasing milk production and improving the economic prosperity of livestock farmers. He directed officials to accelerate work towards strengthening the state’s dairy sector.
The review meeting was held after the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) took charge of the MP State Cooperative Dairy Federation (MPCDF) and milk unions. Senior officials, including Cooperation Minister Vishwas Sarang and Chief Secretary Ashok Barnwal, were present at the meeting.
Milk Collection Rises 27% in Madhya Pradesh
The state has recorded a significant increase in daily milk collection over the past three years.
According to the information presented during the meeting, daily milk collection increased from 8.73 lakh kg in 2024-25 to 9.66 lakh kg in 2025-26. By July of 2026-27, daily collection had further increased to 9.75 lakh kg.
The increase represents a 27% growth in milk collection in the state.
Payments to milk producers have also increased substantially. The amount paid to dairy farmers rose from ₹1,477 crore in 2024-25 to ₹1,780 crore in 2025-26, representing growth of more than 27%.
Madhya Pradesh Targets Dairy Cooperatives in 50% of Villages
The state has already formed 1,926 dairy cooperative societies, while 801 inactive dairy cooperatives have been revived and made operational.
The state has set an ambitious target of forming another 3,827 dairy cooperative societies by 2028-29.
The broader objective is to establish primary dairy cooperative societies in at least 50% of villages across Madhya Pradesh over the next five years.
This expansion is expected to strengthen the dairy cooperative network and provide more livestock farmers with access to organised milk collection and related services.
Gwalior and Jabalpur Milk Unions Receive Interest-Free Loans
The National Dairy Development Board has extended financial support to two milk unions for strengthening their milk collection and processing infrastructure.
- Gwalior Milk Union: ₹470 lakh interest-free loan
- Jabalpur Milk Union: ₹500 lakh interest-free loan
The funding is aimed at supporting milk collection and processing activities in the two regions.
CM Mohan Yadav Issues Key Directions to Strengthen Dairy Sector
During the review, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed officials to focus on increasing milk collection and improving the efficiency of the dairy value chain.
Key directions included:
- Increase milk collection across the state.
- Introduce IT-based monitoring systems for field staff involved in marketing activities.
- Ensure digitisation of the entire dairy value chain.
- Expand the sale of dairy products such as ghee, curd and buttermilk.
- Explore new milk parlours in urban areas to meet growing demand for dairy products.
- Make efforts to establish micro-ATMs at dairy cooperative societies.
- Encourage greater women’s membership in MPCDF.
Focus on Women’s Participation in Dairy Cooperatives
The state government is also seeking to increase the participation of women in the organised dairy sector.
MPCDF has been directed to encourage greater membership of women in dairy cooperative societies. Increasing women’s participation is expected to strengthen their role in the dairy economy and contribute to household income and rural economic development.
Madhya Pradesh Accelerates Its Milk Capital Mission
The expansion of dairy cooperatives, rising milk collection and increased payments to milk producers are central to Madhya Pradesh’s efforts to emerge as a major dairy hub.
With thousands of additional cooperative societies planned by 2028-29, along with investments in milk collection, processing, digitisation and marketing, the state is seeking to build a stronger and more integrated dairy value chain while improving economic opportunities for livestock farmers.
