In a major move to curb the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content, Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh announced that 187 social media pages and accounts have been blocked since June 2023 for allegedly sharing sensitive, violent, and communal content.
The police have also identified 5,406 problematic posts across social media platforms, out of which nearly 3,200 have already been taken down in coordination with the state IT Department and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Social Media Monitoring Intensified to Maintain Public Order
Speaking at a ceremony where 477 newly inducted police vehicles were flagged off by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the 1st Manipur Rifles Ground in Imphal, the DGP stressed the urgent need to combat fake news and misinformation.
“Since June 1, 2023, a total of 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal posts were identified, and around 3,200 posts were taken down. A total of 187 pages and accounts were also blocked,” Singh said.
He added that monitoring and verification of online content remain crucial for maintaining law and order in the violence-hit state.
Manipur Police Expands Digital Outreach
The DGP highlighted the growing digital presence of the Manipur Police, noting that its official social media outreach has expanded significantly during the crisis period.
According to Singh, the police department’s Facebook following has grown to 79,000, while its presence on X has crossed 27,000 followers. The platforms are being actively used to clarify rumours, counter misinformation, and issue public advisories.
Rs 196.61 Crore Approved for Police Modernisation
Reflecting on the violence that erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023, Singh described it as one of the most difficult phases in Manipur’s history.
“When I took charge as DGP in June 2023, the situation demanded not only immediate operational response but also long-term institutional strengthening,” he said.
A comprehensive police modernisation plan was submitted to the state government in late 2023. Subsequently, on October 31, 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs sanctioned Rs 196.61 crore to strengthen security infrastructure, mobility, forensic capabilities, communication systems, and smart policing initiatives.
477 New Police Vehicles Added to Strengthen Security Response
The newly inducted fleet includes armoured vehicles and two-wheelers aimed at improving police mobility and response time across the state.
The DGP said 54 per cent of the vehicles will be deployed in hill districts, while the remaining units will serve valley districts and technical police divisions.
He added that the Centre’s support has significantly improved the operational capabilities of the Manipur Police in tackling emerging security challenges.
Over 1,000 Extortionists Arrested Across Hills and Valley
To crack down on extortion and organised anti-social activities, Manipur Police established a dedicated integrated anti-extortion cell.
According to the DGP, more than 1,000 extortionists have been arrested so far from both hill and valley regions.
He also criticised attempts to obstruct security operations through protests and road blockades, calling such actions harmful to peace, education, development, and the future of Manipur’s youth.
Ethnic Violence Continues to Haunt Manipur
Manipur has remained deeply affected by ethnic violence since May 2023, with clashes between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the hills-based Kuki community claiming over 260 lives and displacing thousands of people.
The state government and security agencies continue efforts to restore normalcy while strengthening both on-ground and digital surveillance systems.
