New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has received the prestigious PM Surya Ghar Excellence Award for its outstanding contribution to promoting renewable energy through rooftop solar installations across railway buildings in the country.

Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan presented the award to the Ministry of Railways at the Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

The Ministry secured the top position in the category of ‘Maximum Buildings Solarized by Central Ministries/Departments’ under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The recognition highlights Indian Railways’ efforts to expand solar energy adoption and promote sustainable energy practices across its infrastructure.

Indian Railways Solarises 12,495 Buildings Across the Country

The Ministry of Railways has identified 15,868 feasible railway buildings across the country for rooftop solar installations. Of these, 12,495 buildings have been equipped with rooftop solar systems so far, accounting for 79% of the total identified buildings.

This achievement reflects the Ministry’s significant progress in expanding clean energy infrastructure across railway establishments.

The Ministry has also commissioned 351 MW of rooftop solar capacity against its overall target of 424 MW, marking substantial progress towards its renewable energy goals.

Railways Commissions 351 MW of Rooftop Solar Capacity

Along with expanding the number of solar-powered buildings, the Ministry of Railways has commissioned 351 MW of rooftop solar capacity against its target of 424 MW. The progress demonstrates the Ministry’s efforts to utilise available rooftop spaces across railway infrastructure to generate clean and renewable electricity.

The initiative is also expected to support energy efficiency and contribute to India’s broader renewable energy and sustainability goals.

Railways Makes Significant Contribution to National Solarisation Target

At the national level, 25,984 out of 39,135 buildings identified across 77 Central Ministries and Departments have been solarised so far. This represents 66% of the total identified government buildings under the initiative. With 12,495 solarised buildings, the Ministry of Railways has made a significant contribution to the country’s overall progress under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Its achievement of the highest number of solarised buildings among Central Ministries and Departments has also established an important benchmark for renewable energy adoption across public institutions.

Indian Railways Targets 100% Solarisation of Feasible Buildings by March 2027

The Ministry of Railways remains committed to completing rooftop solar installations across all remaining feasible railway buildings by March 2027.

The initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to promote renewable energy, improve energy efficiency and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

With 12,495 railway buildings already equipped with rooftop solar systems and 351 MW of capacity commissioned, the Ministry continues to strengthen its commitment to a cleaner, greener and more sustainable railway network.

The PM Surya Ghar Excellence Award recognises these efforts and highlights the growing role of Indian Railways in advancing the country’s renewable energy transition.
