New Delhi: Two 2016-batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officers, Radhe Krishna and Mayank Sharma, have been posted as Superintendents of Police (SPs) in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on deputation for a period of four years.
The appointments bring two officers from the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, into a specialised federal agency responsible for investigating scheduled offences, including cases relating to terrorism and national security.
Their move to the NIA represents a shift from their regular responsibilities under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to an investigative and enforcement environment at the central level.
Radhe Krishna, IRS
Radhe Krishna is a 2016-batch IRS officer of the Customs & Indirect Taxes cadre. Before moving on central deputation, he served in different capacities within the CBIC.
His earlier assignments included serving as Deputy Commissioner before being promoted to Joint Commissioner. He was posted at Haldia under the Kolkata GST and Central Excise zone.
His experience in indirect taxation and enforcement brings a revenue-administration background to his new assignment with the NIA.

Mayank Sharma, IRS
Mayank Sharma is also a 2016-batch IRS officer belonging to the Customs & Indirect Taxes cadre.
He has served in various positions within the CBIC, including as Deputy Commissioner at Palasamudram under the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) zone.
His posting to the NIA places his experience in revenue administration and enforcement within a federal investigative agency.
It is important to distinguish this Mayank Sharma from Dr Mayank Sharma, a 1989-batch Indian Defence Accounts Service officer who has served as Financial Adviser for Defence Services. The two officers belong to different services and batches.
Four-Year Deputation to NIA
Both officers have been posted to the NIA on deputation for four years.
The NIA is India’s central agency for investigation and prosecution of offences relating to terrorism and certain other offences with implications for national security. The agency works on cases involving terrorist activities, terror networks and related offences falling within its statutory mandate.
For officers from the revenue services, such assignments can involve the application of expertise in financial transactions, taxation, regulatory enforcement and investigation to cases where financial trails and economic activities may form part of broader criminal investigations.
The deputation of Radhe Krishna and Mayank Sharma therefore brings officers with CBIC experience into a different area of central enforcement and investigation.
From Revenue Administration to Federal Investigation
Both officers have spent their careers within the revenue administration framework under the Department of Revenue and CBIC. Their new roles as SPs in the NIA mark a significant change in the institutional setting in which they will work.
While their substantive service remains the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes), the four-year deputation places them in operational positions within the NIA.
Their backgrounds in CBIC field formations and enforcement will add to the range of administrative and investigative experience available within the agency during their deputation tenure.
