India Moves to Harden Internet Infrastructure as NIXI, APNIC Set IPv6 and Routing Security Pact

NIXI and APNIC will sign an MoU to advance IPv6 and routing security as AI and rising digital demand reshape India’s Internet infrastructure.

Mumbai: India is set to deepen cooperation on Internet infrastructure security, with the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) preparing to sign an MoU on IPv6 deployment and routing security.

The agreement, scheduled to be signed on September 8 on the sidelines of the 62nd APNIC Conference (APNIC 62) in Mumbai, is aimed at strengthening the security and resilience of India’s Internet infrastructure as artificial intelligence and growing digital services place increasing demands on networks.

NIXI, APNIC to Focus on IPv6 and Routing Security

The proposed MoU will focus on key technologies and practices supporting a more secure and scalable Internet.

Key areas include:

  • Deployment of IPv6
  • Strengthening routing security
  • Improving Internet infrastructure resilience
  • Technical cooperation between Indian and Asia-Pacific Internet communities
  • Supporting the long-term growth of India’s digital infrastructure

The partnership comes as India’s digital ecosystem continues to expand and network infrastructure faces new requirements from AI-powered services and other emerging technologies.

600+ Internet Experts Gather in Mumbai

More than 600 Internet experts, policymakers and technology leaders are participating in APNIC 62, which is being hosted by NIXI and the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Maharashtra government.

The conference brings together network operators, technical experts, policymakers and other stakeholders from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Discussions are focusing on:

  • AI-powered services and network automation
  • Cybersecurity
  • Routing security
  • Internet governance
  • Future Internet infrastructure
  • Network scalability and resilience

AI Raises New Demands on Network Infrastructure

The conference is examining how rapidly developing technologies, particularly AI, are changing the requirements of Internet networks.

MeitY Joint Secretary Sushil Pal said secure, resilient and future-ready Internet infrastructure remains a priority as India’s digital ecosystem grows.

APNIC Director General Jia Rong Low also highlighted the increasing demands being placed on networks by AI and other technological and societal changes.

India’s IPv6 Experience in Focus

APNIC has highlighted India’s experience with IPv6 adoption as an example of how technical capability, investment and collaboration can support Internet growth.

The conference provides a platform for Indian Internet stakeholders to exchange experience with operators and technical experts from across the Asia-Pacific region.

NIXI CEO Dr Devesh Tyagi said the event offers an opportunity to share India’s experience while strengthening cooperation for a secure, resilient and inclusive Internet.

Cybersecurity and Network Automation on Agenda

The opening ceremony features discussions on emerging technology and security challenges.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Amajit Gupta, CEO and Managing Director, Lightstorm Group — AI-driven network automation
  • Yukako Uchida, JPCERT/CC — trust and cooperation in cybersecurity

APNIC 62 is being held in Mumbai from September 4 to 10, with technical workshops, conference sessions, policy meetings and community events.

The planned NIXI-APNIC MoU is expected to provide a concrete framework for cooperation on technologies that underpin the security and long-term resilience of India’s Internet infrastructure.
