NTPC Limited, India’s leading power generation company, is set to play a significant role in the country’s energy expansion by contributing 33 percent of the planned 80 GW coal-based power capacity addition by 2032. This translates to 26 GW of new capacity, according to Gurdeep Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC. “Of the 80 GW, NTPC will add 26 GW of coal-based capacity, including 9.5 GW currently under construction, with all projects slated for completion by 2031-32,” Singh announced in NTPC’s annual report for 2023-24.
As part of this ambitious plan, NTPC has already placed orders for 3,200 MW of coal-based power at its Singrauli-III and Lara-II projects in the fiscal year 2024. “Additionally, tenders for 10.4 GW are underway and expected to be awarded in 2024, with the remaining capacity orders anticipated to be placed within the next year. We are committed to delivering these projects on schedule and streamlining our decision-making processes to ensure efficiency,” Singh stated.
Highlighting NTPC’s dedication to self-sufficiency in coal production, Singh revealed that the company aims to meet 25 percent of its coal requirements from its captive mines by the fiscal year 2029-30. “We have achieved remarkable results in our pursuit of coal self-reliance, with a total coal dispatch of 34.15 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY24, reflecting a growth of over 50% compared to the previous year. This accounts for approximately 13 percent of our total coal consumption. Our goal is to satisfy at least 25 percent of our coal demand through captive mining by FY30,” Singh explained.
NTPC is committed to achieving a balanced energy mix of 60:40 between fossil and non-fossil sources by 2032. “By investing in renewable energy and storage solutions, we are taking significant steps towards becoming a fully integrated clean energy provider. We have over 11 GW of renewable energy and hydro projects currently under construction, with a promising pipeline of more than 20 GW in various stages of tendering,” Singh added.
