New Delhi: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Arun Kumar Singh could receive another extension beyond December 6, 2026, if the government accepts reports that the search-cum-selection committee (SCSC) has failed to identify a suitable candidate for the top post.
Uncertainty continues over the selection panel’s recommendation, with conflicting reports emerging about the outcome of the succession exercise. A petroleum ministry source, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the panel had reportedly been unable to find a suitable candidate, potentially opening the way for Singh’s continuation.
However, no fresh government approval for another extension has been publicly verified. The absence of a suitable candidate would not automatically guarantee Singh an extension, as the final decision rests with the government.
ONGC CMD Succession Process and Selection Panel Update
The process to identify ONGC’s next CMD began with a recruitment notification issued in June 2026. The selection exercise subsequently progressed to the screening and shortlisting of applicants.
A total of 18 applicants were screened in August, of whom seven were shortlisted for further consideration. The shortlisted candidates included senior executives from India’s oil and gas sector.
The selection process was intended to identify a successor to Singh, whose current tenure is based on a contractual extension approved by the government.
Conflicting reports about the selection committee’s final recommendation have raised questions about whether the government will appoint a regular successor or consider extending the incumbent’s tenure.

Seven Candidates Shortlisted for ONGC Chairman Post
The succession exercise saw several senior executives from the public sector oil and gas industry emerge as potential candidates for the position.
Among those shortlisted were:
- Ranjit Rath: Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India Limited.
- Rajarshi Gupta: Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Limited.
- Vikram Saxena: ONGC Director, Technology and Field Services.
According to the earlier report, seven candidates were shortlisted from the 18 applicants screened in August. The available information does not establish whether the selection committee has formally rejected all shortlisted candidates or whether a final recommendation has been officially communicated.
Arun Kumar Singh’s Current Tenure and Previous Extension
Arun Kumar Singh is already serving a one-year contractual extension that took effect on December 7, 2025. Under the terms of the approval, his tenure can end earlier if a regular incumbent takes charge or if further orders are issued by the government.
The government had also constituted a committee to identify his successor as part of the leadership transition process.
If the selection exercise remains inconclusive, the government could consider retaining Singh while initiating or undertaking another search for a suitable candidate. Such a decision, however, would require the necessary approval and cannot be assumed solely from reports of an inconclusive selection process.
Government Decision Remains Crucial for ONGC Leadership
The future of ONGC’s top leadership remains dependent on the outcome of the selection process and the government’s decision.
If the search-cum-selection committee has indeed failed to recommend a suitable candidate, another extension for Singh could emerge as an option to ensure continuity at the country’s leading oil and gas exploration company.
Nevertheless, until an official order is issued, any further extension remains speculative. The government could also proceed with the appointment of a regular CMD if a suitable candidate is recommended and approved.
