New Delhi: Surgeons of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) performed 220 sight-restoring eye surgeries during a two-day Mega Eye Surgical Camp at Tangdhar in Kupwara district, Jammu & Kashmir, under Operation Drishti.
The 10th edition of the surgical camp was held on September 24 and 25 at an underground operation theatre in Tangdhar, a shelling-prone area along the Line of Control (LoC).
220 Surgeries Performed Over Two Days
Most of the procedures performed during the camp were cataract surgeries. Doctors also carried out selected retinal procedures and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries.

The camp was led by Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Head of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantonment.
His team transported advanced phacoemulsification, vitreoretinal and glaucoma equipment across the mountainous terrain to conduct the procedures at Tangdhar.
Patients Came From Villages Near LoC
Patients from Khawarpora, Tangdhar, Tadd, Bagbela, Yangdar and neighbouring hamlets attended the camp after screening.
Information about the camp was also broadcast through Radio Rooh-e-Karnah, following which the Indian Army assisted patients through the process from arrival to recovery.
Army Chief Visits Surgical Camp
Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth visited the camp, interacted with patients and distributed medicines and gifts.
DG AFMS Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja also visited the facility and appreciated the medical teams and local personnel involved in the camp.
Over 3,500 Surgeries Under AFMS Eye Camps
The Tangdhar camp was the 10th edition in the AFMS series of mega surgical eye camps envisaged by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the series has so far screened more than 1.50 lakh patients and conducted over 3,500 surgeries across 10 cities.
The 11th camp is scheduled to be held in Srinagar from September 27 to 29, 2026. The formal closing ceremony is scheduled for September 30 and will be attended by Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
