Yamuna Nagar, Haryana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday laid the foundation stone for two major energy projects in Haryana, aimed at boosting the state’s power infrastructure and contributing to its economic growth.
The first project, the 800 MW thermal power unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamuna Nagar, is set to be a game-changer for the region. The modern unit, which will span 233 acres and cost approximately Rs 8,470 crore, is expected to significantly increase Haryana’s energy self-sufficiency and ensure an uninterrupted power supply across the state. This is part of the Prime Minister’s ongoing effort to enhance electricity availability as part of the government’s broader mission to ensure electricity reaches every corner of the country.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our goal of making India energy-secure,” said Prime Minister Modi at the event. He also announced the commencement of work on the third unit of the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant, which will further benefit both Yamunanagar and the larger state of Haryana.
Emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted power to support various industries, the Prime Minister noted that Yamunanagar is a major industrial hub, producing half of India’s plywood and a significant share of aluminum, copper, and brass utensils. He highlighted that the increased power generation would benefit these industries and support the ‘Mission Manufacturing’ vision.
Reflecting on the progress made in India’s energy sector over the past decade, Modi recalled the power shortages and frequent blackouts before 2014, stating that such crises would have persisted if the previous government had remained in power. He pointed out that India had nearly doubled its electricity production capacity in the last ten years and is now exporting power to neighboring countries.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives like the One Nation-One Grid, new coal power plants, solar energy projects, and the expansion of the nuclear sector, Modi expressed that increasing electricity production is vital for nation-building.
In addition to the thermal power unit, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for a Compressed Biogas Plant in Mukarabpur, Yamuna Nagar. With an annual production capacity of 2,600 metric tonnes, the plant is expected to play a key role in organic waste management, clean energy production, and environmental conservation. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing focus on sustainable energy solutions.
The Prime Minister also launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme aimed at empowering citizens to generate their own power by installing solar panels on rooftops. This initiative not only eliminates electricity bills but also allows citizens to sell surplus energy, creating opportunities for local industries and contributing to the nation’s solar energy goals. Over 1.25 crore people have already registered under this scheme, with many from Haryana joining.
Additionally, Modi inaugurated the 14.4-km Rewari Bypass project, valued at around Rs 1,070 crore, under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. This infrastructure development will decongest the Rewari city, reduce travel time between Delhi and Narnaul by about one hour, and bolster economic and social activity in the region.
These projects reflect the government’s commitment to transforming Haryana’s energy landscape and strengthening the state’s infrastructure for future growth.
