Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Power has pledged financial support of Rs 488 crore to Telangana under the Power System Development Fund. This allocation will fund nine new schemes designed to enhance the state’s power grid, improve resilience, and ensure a more reliable electricity supply.
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry outlined that the schemes will focus on strengthening the infrastructure and reliability of the power grid across Telangana. Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, emphasized the commitment of the Central Government to assist Telangana in its efforts to improve its power distribution systems.
During a review meeting with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and other state officials, Khattar also addressed the issue of legacy dues owed by the state government to the state’s DISCOMs (distribution companies). He urged the Telangana government to clear these outstanding payments in line with the committed trajectory to ensure the timely settlement of current dues, which is vital for the financial stability of the power sector.
To support the state’s progress, Khattar assured that the Central Government would extend support for the installation of smart meters in government offices under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Furthermore, he emphasized that Telangana’s proposal under the planned distribution scheme would be prioritized. According to Khattar, improving the rating of DISCOMs would lower debt-related interest costs, benefiting the state’s overall financial health in the energy sector.
In a separate development, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a Centre of Excellence in Energy Transition at TERI’s Institute of Energy in Hyderabad. The Rs 25 crore initiative aims to promote energy efficiency and sustainable energy practices, further boosting the state’s efforts toward a greener future.
The combination of infrastructure strengthening, financial support, and a focus on energy efficiency marks a significant step in Telangana’s power sector modernization.
