Indian Masterminds Stories

Officer trainees of the 79th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday during their induction training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur.

The interaction offered the young officers an opportunity to engage with the President and gain insights into the critical role played by the tax administration in strengthening India’s economy and governance framework.

Direct Taxes Crucial for National Development

During the interaction, President Murmu emphasised that direct taxes play a vital role in the country’s development. She noted that taxes collected by the government provide a stable source of revenue that supports key sectors such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and welfare programmes.

According to her, a fair, transparent and efficient taxation system is essential not only for economic growth but also for ensuring equality and inclusive development.

IRS Officers’ Role Beyond Tax Collection

Highlighting the broader responsibilities of tax officers, the President pointed out that the role of officers in the Indian Revenue Service extends well beyond the collection of taxes.

She explained that IRS officers frequently deal with complex financial transactions, including monitoring illegal financial flows and analysing intricate corporate structures. These responsibilities make them important stakeholders in maintaining financial transparency and accountability.

Partners in India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ Vision

President Murmu described IRS officers as key contributors to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, often referred to as the vision of “Viksit Bharat.”

She said officers in the service are regularly required to make important decisions that must be fair, efficient and informed by a deep understanding of business and economic activities.

Advice to Young Officers

The President also shared advice for the trainee officers as they begin their careers in public service.

She urged them to:

• Exercise their authority with responsibility and restraint

• Maintain integrity and fairness in decision-making

• Balance enforcement with facilitation

• Uphold constitutional values in public service

According to her, a successful civil servant is one who combines authority with humility and efficiency with empathy.

Training at NADT Nagpur

The officer trainees are currently undergoing their induction training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur, the premier training institution for officers of the Income Tax Department.

Notably, the 79th batch also includes two trainee officers from the Royal Bhutan Service, reflecting the academy’s international training collaborations.
