New Delhi: The Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) on Friday conducted a selection interview for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). However, the process concluded without identifying a suitable candidate for the top position in the public sector shipbuilding company.
The post of CMD, CSL is currently vacant, prompting the selection exercise by the government.
Only Two Candidates Interviewed, None Found Suitable
According to official inputs, the PESB interviewed two candidates for the prestigious leadership role. After evaluation, the board concluded that none of the candidates met the required suitability standards for appointment to the post.
As a result, no recommendation was made for appointment.
PESB Suggests Fresh Selection Mechanism
Following the inconclusive outcome, the PESB has advised the administrative ministry to take further steps for filling the post.
The Board has recommended that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways consider:
- Initiating a fresh selection process, or
- Opting for a Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) route, or
- Any other appropriate mechanism with approval of the competent authority
CMD Post Remains Critical for CSL
The Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited holds a key leadership position in one of India’s most important defence and commercial shipbuilding PSUs. The role involves oversight of shipbuilding projects, defence contracts, and strategic maritime infrastructure development.
With the post remaining vacant, the government is expected to move quickly to initiate a revised selection process.
Administrative Next Steps Awaited
The final decision now rests with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which will determine the next course of action in consultation with the competent authority. A fresh selection route through SCSC is considered a strong possibility if no suitable internal candidates are identified.
