Paris: The Rafale F5 upgrade is moving forward rapidly as France fast-tracks development of the next-generation version of its highly successful Rafale fighter jet

According to official information from France’s Directorate General of Armament (DGA) and reports on recent defence contracts, the Rafale F5 will feature major improvements in radar, electronic warfare, propulsion, connectivity, and weapons systems. The development is especially important for India, which is considering the acquisition of 114 fighter aircraft under its Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme.

France Awards Key Contracts For Rafale F5 Upgrade Programme

France has begun preparing for the Rafale F5 programme before the official development phase starts. The country’s defence procurement agency, the Directorate General of Armament (DGA), has awarded preparatory contracts to leading defence companies.

These contracts have been given to Dassault Aviation, Thales, Safran, and MBDA. The formal development phase of the Rafale F5 is expected to begin by the end of 2026.

What Is The Rafale F5 Upgrade

The Rafale F5 is a major mid-life upgrade designed to ensure the aircraft remains effective against future threats.

France plans to equip the fighter with advanced technologies that will improve combat performance across multiple domains. The upgrade focuses on sensors, electronic warfare, communication systems, engines, and future weapons integration.

Advanced Radar To Boost Detection Capability

One of the biggest upgrades will be the introduction of the Thales RBE2-XG radar. The radar is expected to use gallium-nitride (GaN) technology, which provides higher power and improved performance.

This technology will help pilots detect and track targets at longer distances. The radar is also expected to improve the detection of low radar cross-section targets.

Artificial Intelligence Integration

The new radar will have greater computing power. It is being designed to support artificial intelligence applications. The goal is to improve sensor fusion and collaborative combat operations while reducing pilot workload.

Electronic Warfare System To Receive Major Upgrade

The Rafale’s famous SPECTRA electronic warfare suite will undergo a major redesign. The F5 version will adopt a fully digital architecture. This upgrade is expected to improve threat detection capabilities. It will also enhance electronic attack and jamming performance. The changes are aimed at countering increasingly sophisticated air defence systems expected by 2035.

New Data Link To Improve Connectivity

The Rafale F5 will receive a new Inter-Vehicle Data Link (IVDL) developed by Thales. French defence officials describe the system as a high-speed and secure communication network. The data link is designed to remain effective even in heavily contested electronic warfare environments. Improved connectivity will allow aircraft to share information more efficiently during combat missions.

More Powerful Engine Under Development

Safran is developing the M88 T-Rex engine for the Rafale F5. The engine is expected to increase maximum thrust from around 75 kN to nearly 90 kN. This represents an increase of approximately 20%.

The additional power will support the aircraft’s heavier sensors, advanced electronics, and future weapons.

Rafale F5 Upgrade: New Weapons To Enhance Firepower

The Rafale F5 is being designed around the ASN4G missile programme. The ASN4G is France’s future air-launched nuclear missile.

According to French plans, the missile is expected to fly at speeds exceeding Mach 5. Its operational range is expected to exceed 1,000 kilometres. The missile is scheduled to enter service around 2035.

Successor To Meteor Missile

France is also working on a future air-to-air missile to replace the Meteor. The new missile is expected to provide even greater beyond-visual-range combat capability. This will further strengthen the Rafale’s air superiority role.

Why The Rafale F5 Upgrade Matters For India

The Rafale F5 upgrade comes at an important time for India. The Indian Air Force is pursuing the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft programme to acquire 114 new fighter jets.

Dassault Aviation has reportedly submitted its proposal for the competition. The proposal includes 18 aircraft to be delivered from France. The remaining 96 aircraft could be manufactured in India under local production arrangements.

Potential Benefits For The Indian Air Force

If the Rafale is selected under the MRFA programme, India could eventually operate a much larger Rafale fleet. Future aircraft could gain access to the advanced technologies being developed for the F5 standard.

These include next-generation radar systems, upgraded electronic warfare capabilities, improved connectivity, and more powerful engines. This would significantly enhance India’s long-term air combat capability.
