Retired IAS officer, writer, and politician P. Sivakami was honoured with the Verchol Dalit Literary Award and a ₹1 lakh cash prize by the Neelam Cultural Centre, founded by filmmaker Pa. Ranjith, on Sunday. Speaking at the event, Sivakami said the award was significant not just as recognition but as a challenge to continue pushing for mainstream acceptance. “We are serious thinkers aiming to change society. Ten years ago, such gatherings were rare, but today, it’s heartening to see so many Dalit poets,” she said.
Sivakami noted that Dalit literature often stirs controversy, challenging dominant narratives. “I thought I was just writing stories with aesthetics, but I ended up fighting many invisible opponents,” she remarked, adding that Dalit literature instills fear among caste Hindus by questioning their cultural dominance. She also emphasized the power of writing in English to reach wider audiences.
Pa. Ranjith praised Sivakami’s multi-faceted journey, highlighting her consistent assertion of Dalit identity. He criticized the silence of many Scheduled Caste officials and politicians, urging them to use their power to advocate for the community instead of staying passive.
