New Delhi: The BrahMos upgrade is set to become a key topic during the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin

According to statements from the Kremlin, India and Russia are exploring ways to enhance the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile by adding new capabilities, improving performance, and increasing its competitiveness in global defence markets.

The discussions come ahead of the Modi-Putin bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and highlight the deep defence partnership between the two countries.

India And Russia Eye Advanced BrahMos Upgrade

Russia and India jointly develop and manufacture the BrahMos missile through a long-standing defence partnership. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both countries are considering improvements that could make the missile more effective and attractive for export customers.

According to Russian officials, the focus is on adding new technical features and improving the missile’s operational capabilities.

Why Is BrahMos Important?

BrahMos is one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. It is capable of being launched from land, sea, air, and submarine platforms.

The missile is jointly developed by India and Russia and has become a major symbol of strategic defence cooperation between the two nations.

BrahMos Upgrade: PM Modi-Putin Meeting To Focus On Defence Cooperation

The planned meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin is expected to cover several important defence issues. Apart from the BrahMos Upgrade, discussions may also include:

  • S-400 air defence system deliveries
  • Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft
  • Defence technology sharing
  • Strategic cooperation and investment
  • Energy and trade relations

The meeting will be the second bilateral engagement between the two leaders within a month.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

Russia has indicated its willingness to expand technology cooperation with India. Officials said Moscow is open to sharing advanced technologies, including those related to the Su-57 fighter aircraft, as both countries seek deeper defence collaboration.

This reflects a shift from a traditional buyer-seller relationship toward a broader strategic partnership.

S-400 Deliveries Remain On Track

Russian officials reaffirmed their commitment to completing deliveries of the S-400 air defence system to India. The S-400 is among the most advanced long-range air defence systems in the world. India already operates several S-400 units, which have strengthened the country’s air defence network.

Role Of S-400 In India’s Defence

The system can track and engage multiple aerial targets simultaneously. It provides protection against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. The S-400 gained significant attention after its deployment during recent regional security challenges.

Su-57 Fighter Jet Offer Gains Attention

Russia is also promoting the Su-57 stealth fighter aircraft to India. The aircraft is Russia’s fifth-generation fighter and is designed for advanced air combat missions. Reports suggest that discussions could include technology transfer and possible cooperation related to the platform.

India’s Search For New Fighter Aircraft

India is evaluating several fighter aircraft options to strengthen its air force. Among the aircraft being considered are:

  • Dassault Rafale
  • Lockheed Martin F-21
  • Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet
  • Eurofighter Typhoon
  • Sukhoi Su-57

The final decision will depend on operational requirements, technology transfer opportunities, and long-term strategic goals.

Russia Supports India’s Peace Efforts On Ukraine

Russia welcomed India’s diplomatic efforts regarding the Ukraine conflict. Kremlin officials stated that India’s position on resolving disputes through dialogue aligns with Moscow’s stated approach.

Russian officials also expressed appreciation for India’s willingness to contribute to international peace efforts.

India’s Balanced Foreign Policy

India has consistently called for diplomacy and peaceful dialogue regarding the Ukraine conflict. New Delhi has maintained communication with both Russia and Ukraine while encouraging negotiations and peaceful solutions. This approach has helped India maintain constructive relations with multiple global partners.

What The BrahMos Upgrade Could Mean For India

The proposed BrahMos Upgrade could provide several advantages:

Improved Combat Capability

New technologies could enhance precision, survivability, and operational flexibility.

Greater Export Potential

Improved features may increase demand from friendly countries seeking advanced missile systems.

Stronger Defence Self-Reliance

The project supports India’s efforts to expand indigenous defence manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

Enhanced Strategic Deterrence
