In an engaging and insightful session, Sriram Taranikanti, Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), interacted with Officer Trainees (OTs) of the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) batches of 2024, 2025, and 2026 at the National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA) on April 18, 2026.
The visit highlighted the growing importance of data-driven governance and the role of young statisticians in shaping public policy. Welcoming him, R. Rajesh, Additional Director General, Capacity Development Division, appreciated Taranikanti’s commitment to mentoring future civil servants and expressed hope for deeper collaboration between NSSTA and LBSNAA.
FOCUS ON DATA-DRIVEN GOVERNANCE
Addressing the trainees, Taranikanti emphasised that the ISS plays a critical role in strengthening evidence-based policymaking. He described their work as “selfless service” that impacts governance beyond visible administrative roles. He encouraged officers to focus on core statistical functions rather than getting absorbed in routine administrative work.

He also underlined key qualities of effective civil servants. These included optimism, empathy, and a citizen-centric approach. He urged trainees to act as “eternal optimists” and remain energetic throughout their careers.
Taranikanti highlighted the need to promote statistical thinking at the grassroots level. He encouraged trainees to use field postings to build awareness about data and collaborate with local administrations. Routine surveys, he said, should become tools for broader institutional engagement.
He also advised officers to dedicate at least 30% of their efforts to innovation, analytics, and research. Continuous self-improvement, he noted, is essential for impactful public service.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A discussion that extended over lunch. Trainees found the interaction highly enriching, gaining practical insights into leadership, governance, and the evolving role of statistics in public administration.
