Hyderabad: The case against a trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Uday Krishna Reddy (2025 batch) accused of sexually assaulting a fellow probationer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) has taken a serious turn, with Hyderabad Police invoking charges of rape and attempt to murder based on the complainant’s statement and preliminary medical findings.
The accused officer, who was arrested earlier this week, has already been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. The latest charges come 11 days after a 30-year-old woman IPS probationer lodged a complaint alleging sexual assault, criminal intimidation, physical violence and repeated harassment.
Rape and Attempt to Murder Charges Added
According to police, the case has now been registered under Section 64(1) (rape) and Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 63(b)(iii), following the complainant’s detailed statement.
The accused had already been booked under various provisions relating to:
- Sexual harassment
- Stalking
- Voyeurism
- Outraging the modesty of a woman
- Physical assault
- Criminal intimidation
The addition of the more serious charges significantly strengthens the prosecution’s case.
Medical Examination Supports Allegations
Investigators said the complainant’s allegations received prima facie support during her medical examination.
According to police, doctors found:
- Strangulation marks on her neck
- An abrasion on her shin
These findings prompted investigators to invoke the charge of attempt to murder in addition to rape.
Arrest and Judicial Custody
Police arrested the accused near Aramgarh Crossroads in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Following his arrest:
- He underwent a medical examination at Osmania General Hospital.
- He was produced before the XXV Additional Judicial Magistrate of First Class, Rajendranagar.
- After hearing submissions from both the prosecution and defence, the court remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
- He has since been shifted to Chanchalguda Central Prison.
Relationship Began Through Instagram
According to an official statement issued by Rajendranagar Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Srinivas, the accused came into contact with the complainant in mid-2025 after she responded to an Instagram post describing his journey to becoming an IPS officer.
The two subsequently entered into a relationship while undergoing training at:
- Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA)
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA)
Police Allege Pattern of Abuse and Harassment
Police alleged that the relationship was marked by repeated emotional abuse and threatening behaviour by the accused.
According to the DCP’s statement, the accused allegedly:
- Frequently threatened to end his own life.
- Displayed weapons during arguments.
- Insulted the complainant.
- Pressured her into accepting multiple relationships.
- Damaged her laptop.
- Harassed her repeatedly during the course of their relationship.
Investigators said the complainant eventually ended the relationship due to the accused’s alleged conduct and later married another person.
Investigation Continues
The Hyderabad Police continue to investigate the allegations, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual assault and other offences cited in the complaint.
Officials have indicated that further evidence is being collected and that additional legal action will be taken if warranted as the investigation progresses.
From Andhra Pradesh Constable to IPS Officer
Before entering the IPS, Mr Reddy served as a constable in the Andhra Pradesh Police. He resigned from the force in 2019 to pursue his dream of becoming a civil servant.
His journey attracted widespread appreciation after he cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had publicly congratulated him for his achievement.
Reddy’s rise from a constable to an IPS officer was seen as an inspirational success story.
However, that journey has now been overshadowed by a criminal case registered against him while undergoing IPS training at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
