Ms. Kalpana Nayak (1998-batch IPS officer), Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Tamil Nadu, has alleged an attempt on her life after exposing irregularities in police recruitment. In a complaint to Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal, a 1990-batch IPS officer, she demanded an unbiased probe into a fire incident at her Chennai office on July 29, 2024.

Recruitment Scam & High Court Intervention
Nayak flagged discrepancies in the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) regarding sub-inspectors and other police recruitments under communal reservations. Her revelations prevented an adverse order from the Madras High Court. The court had previously dismissed a writ petition over recruitment flaws, ordering authorities to rectify the candidate list.
Suspicious Fire Incident
On the day of the fire, Nayak was advised not to enter her office. Upon arrival, she found her chair destroyed in the blaze. She stated, “If I had reached earlier, I would have lost my life.” The fire, allegedly caused by an air-conditioning short circuit, occurred just before she was set to review and send a revised candidate list.
Call for Investigation
With no action taken against staff members even after 15 days, Nayak filed a formal complaint on August 15, 2024, alleging foul play and sabotage. Shockingly, the revised candidate list was published without her approval a day after the fire. She expressed concerns about her safety, stating the incident “casts a dark shadow on the state of policing.”
