THDC India Limited has announced its ambitious plan to set up a 1,400 MW pumped storage project (PSP) in Chhattisgarh, marking a significant expansion of its renewable energy portfolio. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) and the state government to develop the hydroelectric power project at Dangari, located in Jashpur district.
The MoU was exchanged in Raipur in the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain. The project is expected to bolster THDC India’s presence in the domestic renewable energy sector, while also contributing to grid stability and clean energy transitions across India.
THDC India Chairman and Managing Director, R K Vishnoi, emphasized the importance of pumped storage projects in balancing renewable energy generation and ensuring efficient grid operations. “PSPs play a crucial role in balancing renewable energy generation, ensuring grid stability, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” Vishnoi said. “This strategic partnership is a significant step towards strengthening renewable energy infrastructure in the state and supporting India’s clean energy transition.”
The Dangari PSP project will utilize surplus power during off-peak hours to pump water, which will later be released to generate electricity during peak demand times, optimizing energy usage. It will also generate thousands of employment opportunities and promote socio-economic development in the region.
Currently, THDC India, based in Rishikesh, has an installed capacity of 2,247 MW, including thermal and renewable energy projects in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Kerala. The company is a joint venture, with a 75:25 ownership split between NTPC and the Uttar Pradesh government.
