Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Government, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved the execution of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Lucknow Metro Phase-1B East–West Corridor, connecting Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. The agreement will be signed between the Government of India, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC).

₹5,801 Crore Project to Strengthen Urban Transport in Lucknow

The Cabinet has approved the project at an estimated cost of ₹5,801.05 crore. According to Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was earlier approved by the Cabinet, and the funding structure will follow a 50:50 cost-sharing model between the Centre and the State.

The new metro corridor is expected to significantly improve public transport efficiency and urban mobility in the state capital.

Key Route: Charbagh to Vasant Kunj Corridor

The East–West corridor will connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, enhancing connectivity across key parts of Lucknow.

The project aims to:

  • Reduce traffic congestion
  • Improve last-mile connectivity
  • Provide modern, reliable public transport
  • Support sustainable urban mobility

Officials said the corridor will strengthen the city’s transport backbone and offer faster commuting options for residents.

Project Approval Timeline and Key Developments

The DPR for the project was first approved on March 5, 2024, in a Cabinet meeting. Later, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, approved the total project cost on September 3, 2025.

The central government’s approval also included a condition that a tripartite MoU must be signed for project execution.

Legal Review and Final Cabinet Approval

Following the Centre’s condition, the MoU draft was legally examined and refined by the Law Department before being placed before the Cabinet.

The Yogi Cabinet has now granted formal approval for the agreement, clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of the state government in project implementation.

Boost to Modern Urban Mobility in Lucknow

The Lucknow Metro Phase-1B corridor is expected to play a key role in transforming urban transport in the city. Once operational, it will provide residents with a faster, cleaner, and more efficient public transport system, reducing dependence on road traffic.
