Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna, a 1991 batch IPS officer, interacted with 23 IPS probationers of the 2023-24 batch on Wednesday, urging the young officers to maintain professional excellence, develop robust public grievance redressal mechanisms, and acquire advanced cyber policing skills to effectively tackle emerging law enforcement challenges.
The interaction took place at the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Lucknow, where the IPS probationers, currently undergoing field training, shared their experiences and feedback from the ongoing 29-week district practical training programme.
DGP Shares Key Priorities for Future Police Leadership
Addressing the trainee officers, DGP Rajeev Krishna emphasized that modern policing requires a combination of ethical conduct, professional competence, legal expertise, and technological adaptability.
As the state’s top police officer, Krishna outlined the priorities of the Uttar Pradesh Police and stressed that public trust remains the foundation of effective law enforcement. He said officers must constantly strive for professional excellence while ensuring that citizens receive timely and effective responses to their grievances.
According to the DGP, an efficient public grievance redressal mechanism not only improves service delivery but also strengthens public confidence in the police force.
Focus on Cyber Policing in a Rapidly Changing Environment
Recognising the increasing threat posed by cybercrime, Rajeev Krishna highlighted the importance of developing strong cyber policing capabilities among young officers.
He advised the probationers to continuously upgrade their technological skills and stay abreast of emerging trends in cybercrime, digital fraud, and online criminal activities. With technology increasingly influencing criminal behaviour, officers must be equipped to investigate and respond effectively to cyber-related offences, he said.
The DGP underlined that cyber policing has become one of the most critical components of modern law enforcement and will continue to play an increasingly important role in maintaining public safety.
Practical Training Essential for Effective Policing
During the interaction, the IPS probationers shared insights from their field training, which exposed them to various aspects of policing and administration.
The officers highlighted their experiences in:
- Crime control and prevention
- Maintenance of law and order
- Cybercrime investigations
- Use of forensic tools and scientific investigation techniques
- Traffic management
- VVIP security arrangements
- Implementation of newly introduced criminal laws
The DGP noted that practical field exposure is indispensable in preparing officers for the realities of police service and helps bridge the gap between theoretical learning and operational challenges.
Ethics, Competence and Legal Knowledge Must Go Hand in Hand
Rajeev Krishna reminded the young officers that ethical conduct must remain at the centre of every policing decision.
He said that while integrity and honesty are non-negotiable qualities for police officers, professional competence and legal knowledge are equally important for ensuring effective law enforcement.
The DGP encouraged probationers to continuously enhance their understanding of criminal laws, investigation procedures, and operational strategies to improve their effectiveness in the field.
He further emphasized that policing today demands a combination of sound judgment, sensitivity, technical expertise, and leadership skills.
Preparing for New Laws and Election Duties
The DGP also advised the probationers to prepare themselves for emerging administrative and operational responsibilities, particularly the implementation of new criminal laws and election-related duties.
With policing responsibilities becoming increasingly complex, officers must be capable of adapting quickly to legal and procedural changes while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, he said.
The interaction provided the young IPS officers an opportunity to understand the expectations of the state police leadership and gain insights into the evolving nature of policing in Uttar Pradesh.
Building the Next Generation of Police Leadership
The meeting reflected Uttar Pradesh Police’s emphasis on developing a new generation of officers equipped to handle both conventional and emerging security challenges.
By focusing on professional excellence, citizen-centric policing, technological capability, and ethical conduct, the state police leadership aims to prepare young IPS officers for leadership roles in an increasingly dynamic law enforcement environment.
The DGP’s interaction reinforced the message that effective policing is not only about maintaining law and order but also about building public trust, ensuring justice, and responding proactively to the changing nature of crime and governance.
