New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, as the next Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). He will take over from Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is scheduled to retire on May 31, 2026.

Currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is one of the Indian Navy’s most experienced officers, with nearly four decades of distinguished service in operational, staff, and training roles.

Appointment as Chief of Naval Staff

The Ministry of Defence announced the appointment on Saturday, confirming that Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will assume office as the new Chief of the Naval Staff effective May 31, 2026.

He presently heads the Western Naval Command, the Navy’s premier operational command headquartered in Mumbai, often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy.

Early Life and Background

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was born and raised in NR Colony, Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, in a family of educators. His father, D. Swaminathan, and mother, Shanta Swaminathan, were both teachers.

He studied at:

  • Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, Bengaluru
  • Sainik School, Bijapur (now Vijayapura)

Inspired by a disciplined educational environment, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, before beginning his illustrious naval career.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1987

Vice Admiral Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. He is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, a highly technical branch crucial to modern naval operations.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan is widely regarded as one of the most academically accomplished officers in the Indian Navy.

Commanding INS Vikramaditya, India’s flagship aircraft carrier, is considered one of the most prestigious assignments in the Navy.
