Vivek Yadav: A Driver’s Son Who Cracked UPSC Twice to Become an IPS Officer

After nearly 20 failures and years of struggle, Vivek Yadav, son of a municipal worker and a seamstress, cracked UPSC twice and secured IPS.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In many homes across India, dreams are built quietly, between long work shifts, unpaid bills, and endless sacrifices. They are shaped not in comfort, but in struggle. In one such modest household in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, a young boy grew up watching his father leave for work every morning and his mother sit by a sewing machine for hours, helping keep the family afloat.

That boy was Vivek Yadav.

Today, Vivek has turned that quiet struggle into a story that has captured attention across the country. In the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025, he secured All India Rank 487 and earned a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS), a milestone that came after years of setbacks, repeated failures, and relentless effort.

This was his fifth attempt.

And what makes his journey even more remarkable is that this is the second consecutive year he has cleared the UPSC. In 2024, he was selected for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). But for Vivek, the journey wasn’t complete yet.

He wanted more. He wanted the uniform.

A CHILDHOOD BUILT ON SACRIFICE

Vivek’s story begins in Chanderi, where he completed his schooling at Saraswati Vidya Mandir before moving to Delhi for higher studies at University of Delhi’s Hindu College.

His educational path was strong, but the realities at home were demanding.

His father worked as a municipal employee, taking on the responsibilities of the household with limited means. His mother worked as a tailor, spending years behind a sewing machine to support the family. Together, they built the foundation on which Vivek would one day stand.

Looking back, Vivek shared in an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, “When you grow up in a house where every rupee matters, you understand the value of hard work very early. My parents taught me that no effort is small if it moves you forward.”

That lesson stayed with him.

NEARLY 20 FAILURES, BUT HE KEPT GOING

For many, UPSC is difficult enough. But for Vivek, the road to success was far longer and heavier than most.

Before reaching this point, he faced failure in nearly 20 competitive exams. These included state-level exams like Patwari, MPPSC, and even constable recruitment tests.

Each result brought disappointment. Each rejection could have ended the journey. But Vivek refused to let failure define him.

He says, “There were times when I questioned everything. But I kept reminding myself, ‘No sorrow is bigger than human courage. The only one who loses is the one who stops fighting.’ That thought kept me moving.”

That mindset changed everything. Instead of walking away, he returned stronger each time.

REFUSING TO SETTLE

For most aspirants, clearing UPSC once is enough to call it a day. In 2024, when Vivek secured a position in the Indian Railway Management Service, he had already achieved what millions dream of.

But deep inside, he knew his destination was different. The IPS had always been his goal.

The inspiration came from his uncle, Dharmendra Yadav, a police officer serving as a Town Inspector in Madhya Pradesh Police. Watching his uncle work and seeing the direct impact of policing on society planted the seed early.

That seed stayed alive. So even after joining IRMS, Vivek kept preparing. He pushed harder. And in UPSC 2025, he got what he had been aiming for all along.

The Indian Police Service.

Speaking about that decision, Vivek told Indian Masterminds, “IRMS was a proud moment for me and my family. But I knew I still had more to give. I didn’t want to stop before seeing how far I could go.”

That decision changed the course of his life.

BREAKING BARRIERS THROUGH HINDI MEDIUM

One of the strongest parts of Vivek’s journey is that he cleared UPSC twice through the Hindi medium.

At a time when many still believe English gives aspirants an advantage, Vivek’s success sends a powerful message.

He proved that language is not the deciding factor. Preparation is. Consistency is. Clarity is.

Vivek puts it simply, “Your medium is never your weakness. Your understanding and discipline matter much more. If your foundation is strong, language will never stop you.”

For countless Hindi-medium aspirants, those words carry weight. They offer confidence. They offer hope.

STAYING ROOTED, NO MATTER HOW HIGH YOU RISE

Despite his success, Vivek remains deeply connected to his roots.

His message to young aspirants is simple: keep trying, stay away from negativity, and never disconnect from where you come from.

He believes success should never distance a person from their identity.

“No matter how far you go, stay connected to your soil, your people, and your cultural roots. That is what keeps you grounded,” he says.

And perhaps that is what makes his story so powerful. Not just the rank. Not just the service. But the journey.

A boy from a modest home. A father working tirelessly. A mother stitching clothes to support her family. Twenty failures. Five attempts. Two UPSC successes.

And now, an IPS officer!

Vivek Yadav’s story is a reminder that sometimes the longest roads create the strongest stories, and that extraordinary journeys often begin in the most ordinary places.
