In a significant development within the Indian bureaucracy, Nidhi Tewari, a 2014 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as the new Private Secretary (PS) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nidhi Tewari, a seasoned civil servant, hails from Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s parliamentary constituency. Ms Tewari, who secured the 96th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination – 2013, brings a wealth of experience to the prestigious role. Before joining the PMO, she had worked in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. Her extensive knowledge in international relations, particularly in the fields of foreign policy and security affairs, has been a key asset in her rise through the ranks.
Ms Tewari’s expertise in global diplomacy and security matters has proven invaluable during her time in the PMO. Serving as Deputy Secretary since January 6, 2023, after being promoted from her previous role as Under Secretary, she was instrumental in the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, reporting directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Her portfolio covered critical areas such as External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs, and also extended to state-level issues, including those concerning Rajasthan.
Her role in shaping India’s foreign policy has been especially vital during India’s G20 presidency, where she was actively involved in key diplomatic engagements and decision-making processes. From Varanasi to the PMO
Her connection to Prime Minister Modi’s constituency, Varanasi, adds an interesting layer to her career. Hailing from Mehmurganj, Varanasi, Tiwari’s appointment comes at a time when Modi has represented the constituency since 2014. Tiwari’s trajectory has been one of remarkable growth, as she transitioned from her earlier position as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi to joining the prestigious Indian Foreign Service.
