New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Sanjeev Jain as the next Ambassador of India to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly known as North Korea. A 2008-batch IFS officer, Jain is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to the Republic of Cabo Verde and is expected to assume his new assignment in Pyongyang shortly.

The appointment comes a little over a year after India restored full ambassadorial representation in North Korea by filling a diplomatic vacancy that had remained unoccupied for nearly four years following the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEA Announces Appointment

In an official statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “ Sanjeev Jain (YOA: 2008), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cabo Verde, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

The appointment is part of the Government of India’s regular diplomatic reshuffle and places Jain at one of India’s strategically significant diplomatic missions in East Asia.

A Seasoned Career Diplomat

Mr Jain is a 2008-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer who has built a diverse diplomatic career across multiple continents and functional domains.

Over nearly two decades in the diplomatic service, he has handled assignments related to:

  • Parliamentary affairs
  • Administration
  • Consular services
  • Press and media relations
  • Science and technology cooperation
  • Cultural diplomacy
  • Indian community affairs
  • Trade and commerce
  • Multilateral diplomacy

His broad exposure across bilateral and multilateral engagements has earned him a reputation as a versatile career diplomat.

Educational Background

IFS Jain completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from the University of Delhi before clearing the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination and joining the Indian Foreign Service in 2008.

While the Ministry of External Affairs generally does not disclose personal details such as diplomats’ hometowns, Jain’s academic and professional background reflects a steady rise through India’s diplomatic establishment.

Diplomatic Postings Across the World

Throughout his diplomatic career, Jain has served in several important Indian missions abroad.

His overseas assignments include postings in:

  • Dubai (UAE)
  • Paris (France)
  • Berlin (Germany)
  • Tokyo (Japan)
  • Osaka (Japan)
  • Kandy (Sri Lanka)

These assignments exposed him to a wide range of diplomatic, economic, cultural and consular responsibilities.

Apart from overseas postings, he has also served at the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters in New Delhi.

Role at MEA Headquarters

Before his appointment as Ambassador, Jain served as a Director in the Ministry of External Affairs, where he handled countries belonging to the ASEAN region.

He was also associated with organising several major multilateral engagements, including the BRICS Summit held in Goa, gaining valuable experience in international negotiations and summit diplomacy.

India’s First Resident Ambassador to Cabo Verde

One of the defining milestones of Sanjeev Jain’s career came in 2023, when he was appointed as India’s first resident Ambassador to the Republic of Cabo Verde.

His appointment marked a significant expansion of India’s diplomatic presence in Africa.

During his tenure in Cabo Verde, he worked towards strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Capacity building
  • Human resource development
  • Digital technology
  • Development partnership

His tenure contributed to enhancing India’s engagement with the strategically located island nation in the Atlantic Ocean.

Now Headed to North Korea

Jain will now represent India in Pyongyang, one of the world’s most closely watched diplomatic postings.

India maintains diplomatic relations with North Korea despite the country’s international isolation and sanctions regime. The Indian Embassy in Pyongyang serves as an important channel for diplomatic communication and humanitarian engagement.

His appointment comes after India resumed ambassador-level representation in Pyongyang in 2024 following a prolonged gap caused largely by pandemic-related restrictions.

With extensive experience in diplomacy, administration and multilateral affairs, Jain is expected to further strengthen India’s diplomatic engagement with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

India–North Korea Relations

India and North Korea established diplomatic relations in 1973.

Although bilateral engagement remains limited, India has maintained diplomatic channels with Pyongyang for decades while supporting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

India has also extended humanitarian assistance to North Korea on several occasions and continues to maintain an embassy in Pyongyang despite the country’s challenging geopolitical environment.

Jain’s appointment signals India’s continued commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement with North Korea through sustained dialogue and official representation.
