Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel paid tribute to renowned nationalist thinker and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, on his 125th birth anniversary at the Gujarat Legislative Assembly podium on July 6, 2026.
The Chief Minister offered floral tributes before the oil painting of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and remembered his contributions towards national unity, equality, and patriotism.
CM Bhupendra Patel Remembers Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s Contribution to National Integration
In a post on X, CM Bhupendra Patel expressed his respect for Dr Mookerjee and highlighted his commitment towards the complete integration of Kashmir and equal rights for all citizens.
The Chief Minister stated that Dr Mookerjee dedicated his life to the cause of national unity and fought until his last breath for the principle of one nation with equal rights for every citizen.
CM Patel further said that Dr Mookerjee’s vision of ending the system of “one nation with two constitutions, two Prime Ministers, and two flags” has been fulfilled under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He added that Dr Mookerjee’s ideals and his commitment to putting the nation first will continue to inspire generations with a spirit of patriotism and devotion towards the country.

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee: Founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh
Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951, which later became the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, Dr Mookerjee was an educationist, parliamentarian, statesman, and humanitarian. He came from an academic and nationalist family background. His father, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee, served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and was also a judge of the Calcutta High Court.
Dr Mookerjee’s Political Journey and Nationalist Ideals
In 1940, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee became the acting president of the Hindu Mahasabha and declared complete independence as a political objective.
He later served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Interim Government before resigning from the position.
Dr Mookerjee also left the Hindu Mahasabha following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.

The Bharatiya Janata Party observes June 23 as ‘Balidan Diwas’ every year to commemorate Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s death in Kashmir in 1953.
His life and political journey continue to remain a significant part of India’s political history, with supporters remembering his emphasis on national unity, constitutional equality, and patriotism.
