Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday inaugurated a major infrastructure milestone in the state by opening the ₹175-crore cable-stayed flyover at Bhat Crossroads on the Gandhinagar–Ahmedabad Airport Road. The project marks a significant upgrade in the urban transport network of the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor.
The six-lane flyover, developed jointly by the Roads and Buildings Department and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), is expected to ease heavy traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and the airport.
Gujarat’s First Urban Cable-Stayed Flyover Opens to Public
The newly inaugurated structure is Gujarat’s first urban cable-stayed flyover bridge. Spanning 1.48 km, the bridge has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore.
Officials said the flyover will play a crucial role in reducing traffic bottlenecks at Bhat Circle, one of the busiest junctions on the corridor. The design enables a two-level traffic system, where S.P. Ring Road traffic passes below while Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar traffic flows above.
Major Boost to Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Connectivity
The project is expected to significantly improve travel efficiency along the high-traffic Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar–Airport route. Authorities noted that the corridor handles over 1.93 lakh vehicles daily, making congestion a persistent challenge.
Key benefits of the flyover include:
- Reduced travel time between Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and the airport
- Decongestion of Bhat Circle junction
- Improved fuel efficiency due to smoother traffic flow
- Enhanced regional connectivity for commuters
Dedicated six-lane service roads have also been developed to support traffic movement toward the S.P. Ring Road, Vadodara, and Surat.
Ground-Breaking for Narmada Canal Bridge Expansion
Along with the inauguration, CM Bhupendra Patel also performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion of the Narmada Main Canal Bridge between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle.
The ₹48-crore project will expand the existing six-lane bridge into a twelve-lane corridor. Two additional three-lane bridges will be constructed on either side of the existing structure to accommodate rising traffic demand and future growth.
Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development
The flyover and bridge expansion projects are part of a larger effort to strengthen the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar urban infrastructure network. The Roads and Buildings Department and AUDA have jointly executed the flyover project with equal cost-sharing.
Officials stated that the integrated design ensures seamless traffic movement while supporting long-term urban expansion plans in the region.
Dignitaries Present at the Event
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including:
- MP Mr. Hasmukh Patel
- Gandhinagar MLAs Smt. Rita Patel and Mr. Alpesh Thakor
- Gandhinagar Mayor Smt. Mira Patel
- City BJP President Mr. Ashish Dave
- Senior officials of the Roads and Buildings Department
The inauguration of the cable-stayed flyover at Bhat Crossroads and the launch of the canal bridge expansion project mark a major step forward in transforming the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor into a high-capacity, future-ready urban transport network. The initiatives are expected to significantly enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and support the region’s growing economic and commuter demands.
