Chennai: From serving as a rural doctor to conducting some of India’s most high-profile Income Tax raids and now taking oath as a cabinet minister, K.G. Arunraj’s journey is one of the most remarkable transitions in contemporary Tamil Nadu politics.
A former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and a trusted strategist of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Arunraj was sworn in as a minister in the newly formed Tamil Nadu government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. He won the Tiruchengodu seat by 28,712 votes in the 2026 Assembly elections, which marked TVK’s historic electoral debut.
From Medicine to Public Service
Born around 1979 in Salem, Arunraj is the son of late K.P. Ganesan. He completed his MBBS from Madras Medical College in 2002 under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
Before entering the civil services, he spent nearly five years working as a doctor in villages of Krishnagiri district. This grassroots experience exposed him to the challenges of rural healthcare, poverty, and governance, shaping his later approach to public service.
Cracking UPSC and Joining the IRS
In 2009, Arunraj cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination and joined the Indian Revenue Service.
Over more than 15 years, he served in the Income Tax Department across Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Maharashtra, earning a reputation as a determined and high-performing officer.
High-Profile Income Tax Operations
Arunraj was associated with several major investigations, including:
- The 2016 raid on businessman J. Shekhar Reddy, which reportedly led to the seizure of about ₹90 crore in cash and over 100 kg of gold.
- Investigations connected to the Kodanadu Estate case.
- Searches involving relatives and associates of V. K. Sasikala.
In 2021, while serving as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, he was transferred by the Election Commission of India and attached to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
Taking Voluntary Retirement to Enter Politics
After a distinguished tax administration career, Arunraj opted for voluntary retirement from the IRS in May 2025.
Soon afterward, in June 2025, Vijay appointed him as General Secretary for Policy and Propaganda of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
In this role, Arunraj emerged as one of the party’s principal policy thinkers and organizational strategists.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Election Breakthrough
