Bhopal: In a major relief for aspiring doctors, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced significant reforms aimed at making medical education more affordable and accessible for meritorious students. Candidates securing admission through the NEET merit list will benefit from a one-third reduction in tuition fees, while an increase in MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges is expected to create more opportunities for deserving students.

The state government has also decided that admissions under the management quota in private medical colleges will now be conducted through state government counselling based on NEET merit, ensuring greater transparency in the admission process.

One-Third Fee Reduction for Meritorious Students

The biggest highlight of the reforms is the reduction in medical education fees for students admitted on the basis of NEET merit.

The move is expected to substantially reduce the financial burden on talented students and encourage more deserving candidates to pursue medical education without facing high tuition costs.

Officials said the decision is aimed at promoting merit-based admissions while making professional medical education more affordable for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

More MBBS Seats in 2026

Alongside the fee reduction, the state has significantly expanded the number of MBBS seats available in both government and private medical colleges.

Compared to 2023, the total number of seats has increased considerably for the 2026 academic session, giving more NEET-qualified students an opportunity to secure admission.

Seat Availability Comparison

Category20232026
Government Medical College Seats2,2753,020
Private Medical College Seats2,4003,000
Total Seats4,6756,020

More Seats Reserved for Meritorious Students

The increase in overall capacity has also expanded opportunities for students admitted purely on merit.

In 2023:

  • Total merit seats: 4,315
  • Government colleges: 2,215
  • Private colleges: 2,040

For 2026:

  • Total merit seats: 4,520
  • Government colleges: 3,020
  • Private colleges: 1,500

The revised distribution substantially increases merit-based admissions in government medical colleges while continuing to provide opportunities in private institutions.

Management Quota Admissions Through NEET Counselling

In another significant reform, admissions under the management quota will also be routed through state government counselling based on NEET merit.

This measure is expected to make the admission process more transparent, ensure merit remains a key criterion, and bring greater uniformity to medical admissions across the state.

Greater Opportunities for Aspiring Doctors

With reduced fees, expanded seat capacity and transparent counselling, the reforms are expected to benefit thousands of NEET aspirants across Madhya Pradesh.

The combination of lower educational costs and increased admission opportunities is likely to encourage more talented students to pursue MBBS education while strengthening the state’s medical education ecosystem.
