It goes without saying that civil services require complete focus, grit, and determination. Dealing with the public, looking into official matters, flipping through numerous files, bringing out policies, and making changes in the country for good, and taking decisions day in and day out can be extremely tiring. But this is something bureaucrats do on an everyday basis.
Amongst all of it, one may hardly get any time to pursue their hobby. But such is not the case for IPS officer Sukirti Madhav Mishra, who rejoices in pursuing his passion for writing and reciting poetry, even after a long day’s work. In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, he talked about it.

A 2015-batch Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer, Mr. Mishra had an inclination towards literature since his childhood. He grew up reading numerous books and texts in the Hindi language and soon, he started reading between the lines and understood the underlying meanings of whatever book he picked.
“Literature always interested me. I started taking out some time from here and there, once I got into the service to read. Gradually, I started penning down my words too. My writings basically depict my emotions and understanding of things from an alternative presence,” Mr. Mishra told Indian Masterminds.
SRIJAN’S DIARY
At present the Superintendent of Police at Shamli (Western Uttar Pradesh), Mr. Mishra has come up with his own blog called ‘Srijan’s diary’ wherein he pens down his emotions and feelings in the form of short stories or poems. He prefers Hindi medium to portray his writings.
“Mostly, my writings are based on emotions such as the relationship between a mother and her child, the feeling of wearing the uniform, etc. Sometimes, I also entrap what I feel on a particular day or time in my poems and blogs,” stated Mr. Mishra.
AN AVID POET
The officer puts his heart, mind, and soul into his poems. He never thinks of a particular topic to “cover” while writing poetry. It comes naturally to him. “I just sit down and pick my pen and the words automatically come flowing through my mind,” he held.
Mr. Mishra’s poem ‘Main Khaki Hoon’ is one of his best works yet. The poem also attained major praises and popularity when it was recited by another IPS officer during his interaction with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on the occasion of passing out parade of civil servants.
“It was an absolute honor for me that my poem was read out in front of the Prime Minister!” he exclaimed.
While the officer was under training in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, he came across the sacrifices that policemen made and the challenges that they faced in society.
“When I finished with my training, I penned down my emotions including my feelings towards the sacrifices made by them, the training period, and about my senior and subordinates, etc.” he told Indian Masterminds.
As for his future plans, Mr. Mishra says that one day he would like to publish a book about his work, but right now it may be too early to do so. He would be glad to collaborate with his father, who is also an accomplished writer and publish a book with him.
The officer believes that all bureaucrats should pursue at least one hobby, which would help them in taking their mind off the stress of the job. It would also be beneficial to them in the long run, he feels.
