Showcasing Karnataka As Ultimate Tourist & Cultural Destination

Indian Masterminds Stories

As Bengaluru hosted the first set of G20 events, the Karnataka government showcased the state’s rich legacy and cultural perspectives before the delegates.

IAS officer Ram Prasath Manohar, the Director of Karnataka Tourism, in an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, detailed the efforts undertaken by him.

The Group of Twenty, or G20, is an intergovernmental organisation made up of the European Union and 19 other nations (EU). It strives to address important global economic concerns like international financial stability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable development.

This year, Bangalore hosted the first meeting of the G20 Finance Track under India’s G20 Presidency. The chance to lead this significant global economic bloc for a whole year presented itself at a time when India’s economy is experiencing the greatest growth among developed nations.

REINFORCING ‘BRAND KARNATAKA’

International delegates from more than 35 nations attending the Bengaluru leg of the G20 Summit Meet have been treated like royalty as part of an initiative by Karnataka Tourism. The arrival of visitors from other countries helps to promote “Brand Karnataka” and the tourist department’s slogan, “One State, Many Worlds.” Live performances of Dollu Kunitha, the flute, the violin, and vivacious traditional dances by Yakshagana, Veeragase, and Pooja Kunitha were among the live art forms that dazzled the audience.

“Karnataka Tourism, the nodal agency coordinating this renowned event, views this as a significant and landmark opportunity to exhibit the finest that the state has to offer to a diverse and discerning audience. In their pavilion, which is modelled after the Mysore Palace in all its magnificence, Karnataka Tourism, along with the organisations of the Jungle Lodges and Resorts and KSTDC, also displayed the enormous tourism potential of the state,” Mr. Manohar told Indian Masterminds.

EXHIBITING OUR CULTURE

The tourism department, along with other departments, reached out to the delegates from the various under the guidance of Chief Secretary Ms. Vandita Sharma, to Government, Additional Chief Secretary  Mr. Kapil Mohan, and Mr Manohar provided them an experience of cultural performances, tourist destinations, coffee sampling, handwoven silk from Karnataka and handicraft heritage from Cauvery. Karnataka Handicrafts affiliated artisans also held live demonstrations on making Channapatna Toys at the venue.

“The exhibition also provided the visiting delegates with a glimpse into the world of millets as a super-crop. The UN has proclaimed 2023 as the International Year of Millets, a result of the efforts of the governments of India and Karnataka to gain recognition for these nutrient-rich crops internationally,” Mr. Manohar said.

A TOUR OF THE STATE

In total, 14 G20 summits were held in Karnataka which included 11 in Bengaluru, two in Hampi, and one in Mysuru. The State felt honoured to be granted this chance because this was the highest summit held after Delhi-NCR. The state presented many offerings during the conference and the delegates’ stay. Day tours were organized inside Bengaluru as well as to Mysuru, Hampi, Nandi Hills, and Bhoga Nandishwara Temple.

“We looked forward to also showcase the Golden Chariot, South India’s only luxury train. A Bangalore City Tour was organized on 15th December 2022 to showcase our rich culture and heritage as well as our industrial and technology strengths. During the guided tour, the delegates visited prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru Palace, Cubbon Park, Vidhan Souda (Assembly) and other places,” he said.

SILK, MILK, HONEY, COFFEE

With regard to venue management, lodging arrangements, security, transportation, cultural programming, state-related branding and publicity, excursions, road and infrastructure, and providing the delegates with gifts and souvenirs from the state, Karnataka left no stone unturned to ensure the smooth running of the G20 meetings.

Silk, milk, coffee, honey, and other products are well-known from “Karnataka – One State, Many Worlds.” It is blessed with a rich cultural heritage and is home to numerous forts, architectural wonders, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Other varied tourist attractions include national parks, seaside sceneries, and pilgrimage sites.

“The state provides a wide range of tourist attractions to meet the needs of various visitor demographics, including those interested in eco-tourism, wellness, and adventure,” he told Indian Masterminds.

Karnataka has been one of the most popular travel destinations in the nation over the years and has carved out a place for itself in the global tourist market. The State has kept this position for three years running as of 2019, making it the third most popular destination among domestic travellers.
