Indian Masterminds Stories

Imagine spending years meticulously strategizing for a single, life-altering move. Now, replace the chessboard with the notoriously complex UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), and you have the incredible story of Nausheen, a 24-year-old who just aced the exam in her fourth attempt, securing a phenomenal All-India Rank (AIR) 9. Hers is a tale that echoes with resilience, a dash of strategic brilliance, and the dogged support that fuels even the most ambitious dreams.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, Nausheen shared details about her life and journey.

INSPIRED BY ACADEMIC CIRCLES

Hailing from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, Nausheen’s academic journey was deeply influenced by the vibrant atmosphere of Delhi University. An alumnus of Khalsa College, and surrounded by peers with a keen interest in current affairs, she found herself drawn toward the challenging world of UPSC Civil Services.

While her father, a director at Prasar Bharti, and mother, a homemaker, provided immense support, it was the stimulating discussions at DU that ignited the spark for pursuing this path.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Nausheen’s path to UPSC glory wasn’t a straight shot. After breezing through the prelims and mains in 2020 and 2021, the 2022 prelims threw her a curveball.  Anxiety crept in, and she decided to shake things up. Enrolling at Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy, Nausheen ditched her reliance on coaching materials and dove headfirst into in-depth newspaper analysis.

“I did not take any coaching previously, but after two failed attempts, I decided to join Jamia Milia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy. I took this attempt after solely studying from Jamia, and I believe, it played a huge role in my success,” she told Indian Masterminds.

SHIFT IN STRATEGY

Talking about the changes that she brought in her preparation strategy to clear the exam on her fourth attempt, Nausheen shared, “After three failed attempts, this time I made up my mind to not follow anyone else’s strategies. I made my own strategy at every stage. I kept away from coaching compilations but instead made newspaper notes of my own. This differentiated my answers from others and helped me immensely.”

This strategic shift proved to be a game-changer, propelling her to success and a spot among the 31 UPSC qualifiers from Jamia Millia Islamia.

FROM ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO MENTAL STRENGTH: THE JAMIA EFFECT

Nausheen readily acknowledges the pivotal role played by Jamia Millia Islamia in her success. The institute’s supportive environment, coupled with the guidance from peers who understood the mental challenges of this demanding exam, helped her overcome anxiety and navigate the emotional rollercoaster of repeated attempts.

“The constant support of my family also served as a pillar of strength throughout my journey.”

CHESSBOARDS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

Beyond academics, Nausheen finds solace in playing chess, a game that sharpens her focus and strategic thinking. Additionally, her love for music, which encompasses diverse genres, helps her maintain a sense of calm and rejuvenation.

These pursuits highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy balance during the demanding UPSC preparation process.

A PASSION FOR HISTORY, A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Nausheen’s academic background in history played a crucial role in her choice of optional subject. Her comfort and deep understanding of the subject undoubtedly contributed to her success. During the crucial interview round, Nausheen’s passion for history shone through when she confidently discussed her views on historical events she wished had never occurred, highlighting the colonization of African and Asian countries.

With her sights set on the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Nausheen embodies the ideals of a future civil servant. She aspires to utilize the values instilled by her family and the experiences gained during her preparation to serve the nation, particularly focusing on uplifting the vulnerable sections of society.

TIP FOR THE ASPIRANTS

A special tip that Nausheen wishes to give to other aspirants who are still trying to crack the examination is – “Please make your own strategies and don’t follow previous years’ toppers blindly. It’s not necessary that something that worked for them will work the same for you. You know what is best for you, and you should listen to your mind while preparing for the exam.”

Aspiring civil servants, take note! Nausheen’s story is a call to arms, urging you to embrace perseverance, adapt your strategy, and leverage your support system to conquer the UPSC.
