Can a single platform secure your mobile, track lost phones, and combat telecom fraud? Discover how Sanchar Saathi is transforming India’s digital safety landscape.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In an era where mobile phones are central to daily life, the need for secure and transparent telecom services is greater than ever. At the forefront of this transformation is Navin Jakhar, an Indian Telecommunications Service (ITS) officer, spearheading the Sanchar Saathi initiative under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Currently posted as Assistant Director General in the DoT, his work on this innovative platform is enhancing the security and convenience of mobile subscribers across the country while making digital spaces safer for millions.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, he shared insights on his project.

THE VISION BEHIND SANCHAR SAATHI

“Telecom security isn’t just about technology; it’s about empowering citizens,” says Navin Jakhar. This vision led to the creation of Sanchar Saathi, a multi-functional platform that enables users to monitor, manage, and secure their mobile connections with ease.

The portal integrates two key modules:

  • Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR)
  • Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP)

These modules work seamlessly to address issues like lost phones, fraudulent connections, and telecom scams, ensuring that every mobile user has better control over their digital identity.

CITIZEN-CENTRIC FEATURES OF SANCHAR SAATHI

1. Tracking and Recovering Lost Phones

The CEIR module is a game-changer for those who lose their mobile devices. With a few clicks, users can report their lost or stolen phones, triggering a system-wide block across all telecom networks in India. This renders the device unusable and prevents misuse.

If someone attempts to use the blocked phone, the system immediately generates its location, enabling swift action by law enforcement. Once recovered, the phone can be unblocked and returned to its owner.

2. Monitoring SIM Connections with TAFCOP

The TAFCOP module empowers users to check the number of mobile connections registered under their name. Unauthorized or unnecessary SIMs can be reported and deactivated, ensuring better control and security for subscribers.

“Mobile connections are like digital doorways to our lives. Sanchar Saathi ensures that only the rightful owner holds the key,” he shared with Indian Masterminds.

COMBATTING TELECOM FRAUD AND CYBERCRIME

With the rise in cybercrime, Sanchar Saathi also acts as a robust defense mechanism against fraudulent communications.

  • Blocking Fraudulent Numbers: Users can report suspicious calls or messages through the portal. The system analyzes connections between phone numbers, devices, WhatsApp accounts, and bank details to detect and prevent scams.
  • Preventing International Call Spoofing: To counter spoof calls originating abroad, an International Call Spoofing Prevention System ensures only genuine calls reach Indian users.

STAY AWARE: BUILDING AN INFORMED CITIZENRY

Another highlight of Sanchar Saathi is its ‘Keep Yourself Aware’ section, which provides users with the latest updates on telecom security, fraud prevention, and safe practices. This feature reflects Jakhar’s belief in informed decision-making.

“Awareness is the first step towards security. We want every citizen to feel confident and secure in their mobile usage,” he stated.

IMPACT AND SUCCESS OF SANCHAR SAATHI

Since its launch, the portal has achieved remarkable milestones:

  • 8.5 crore users have accessed the portal.
  • Over 1 crore unauthorized mobile connections have been reported and resolved.
  • Daily visitor count averages 2 lakh, with a global website rank improvement of 4,108 places in the past three months.

Such numbers underscore the public’s trust and engagement with this initiative, setting a new standard for citizen-oriented governance in the telecom sector.

DRIVING CHANGE THROUGH COLLABORATION

The success of Sanchar Saathi is a collaborative effort. Field units of the DoT and telecom operators have played a crucial role in making the platform effective. Jakhar credits this teamwork.

“Our collective goal is to make telecom services transparent, secure, and citizen-friendly. Sanchar Saathi is a step in that direction, and the results speak for themselves,” he shared with Indian Masterminds.

THE FUTURE OF TELECOM SECURITY

With plans to expand the platform’s capabilities and integrate more user-friendly features, Jakhar envisions Sanchar Saathi becoming an indispensable tool for every mobile user in India.

In a time when digital safety is paramount, Navin Jakhar’s leadership and Sanchar Saathi’s transformative impact are paving the way for a secure and empowered telecom landscape in the country.
