Senior IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh, from the 1991 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This decision follows a proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs and an official order issued by Director Sakshi Mittal on January 18.
Singh, currently serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, will assume charge from Vitul Kumar, who has been officiating as the Special DG of CRPF since December 30, following the retirement of Anish Dayal Singh on December 31, 2024.
Known for his robust approach, Singh’s career includes pivotal roles such as his stint with the Special Protection Group (SPG) and significant service at the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he served as Inspector General until his return to Assam in late 2019. His return was prompted by his appointment as ADGP (Law and Order) during the Citizenship Amendment Act protests in Assam.
During his tenure, Singh oversaw law enforcement during turbulent times, including the Rhino Protection Task Force and Directorship of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam. He is recognised for his active presence on social media with a substantial following.
Singh, whose daughter is also an IPS officer posted in Delhi Police, expressed gratitude upon his appointment, reflecting on his connection to Assam, which he fondly calls his “Karmabhumi.”
