Bihar’s Sukhet Model: Madhubani Village Turns Waste into Wealth with Vermicompost and LPG Benefits

Sukhet Panchayat’s innovative waste management initiative converts cow dung into high-quality organic fertiliser, boosts rural income and earns national recognition
Indian Masterminds Stories

Patna: The Sukhet Gram Panchayat in Madhubani district of Bihar has created a remarkable example of rural development, cleanliness and environmental conservation by transforming waste into a source of income. The innovative Sukhet Model has gained national attention and was also praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his popular radio programme Mann Ki Baat.

Located in the Jhanjharpur block of Madhubani, Sukhet Panchayat has developed a unique system where cow dung and organic waste are converted into high-quality vermicompost, while villagers receive LPG gas benefits in exchange for contributing cow dung.

Sukhet Model Solves Village Waste Problem Through Innovation

The initiative was started by progressive farmer Sunil Kumar from Machhadi village with the aim of solving the problem of scattered cow dung and waste in rural areas.

Sukhet Panchayat traditionally depended heavily on animal husbandry, but cow dung lying on roads and open spaces had become a major cleanliness challenge. It caused:

  • Unhygienic surroundings.
  • Bad odour in residential areas.
  • Increased risk of diseases.
  • Difficulty in maintaining village cleanliness.

To address the issue, Sunil Kumar developed a sustainable waste management model by bringing villagers together.

50-60 Families Participate in Waste Collection System

Under the Sukhet Model, around 50 to 60 rural families were connected with the initiative.

A door-to-door collection system was introduced where carts collect:

  • 20 to 30 kg of cow dung and kitchen waste daily from households.
  • Organic waste from villages is transported for scientific processing.

This system helped eliminate scattered waste from village streets and significantly improved cleanliness standards.

Vermicompost Units Convert Waste into High-Quality Organic Fertiliser

For proper processing of collected cow dung and organic waste, Sunil Kumar established two large sheds for vermicomposting.

The details of the vermicompost unit include:

  • Shed size: 70 feet long and 20 feet wide.
  • Monthly waste processing capacity: Around 100 quintals of cow dung and organic waste.
  • Monthly production: Around 35 to 40 quintals of high-quality vermicompost.

The project received technical support from Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa.

The university initially started a pilot project on Sunil Kumar’s land and later became a major buyer of the organic fertiliser produced through the initiative.

LPG Coupon System Becomes the Biggest Attraction of Sukhet Model

One of the most unique features of the Sukhet Model is its LPG coupon system, which directly benefits rural families.

Under this initiative:

  • Farmers or villagers providing 1,200 kg of cow dung receive a coupon for one LPG cylinder refill.
  • A family supplying around 20 kg of cow dung daily can get a free LPG refill every two months.

This system has provided financial relief to rural households by reducing cooking fuel expenses and encouraging the use of clean energy.

Farmer Earns ₹3 Lakh Annually Through Waste Management Initiative

The innovative model has not only improved cleanliness but has also created a sustainable source of income.

According to Sunil Kumar:

  • The initiative helps him earn up to ₹3 lakh annually.
  • The project has generated employment opportunities for six local youths.
  • Villagers are benefiting through cleaner surroundings and reduced household expenses.

Sukhet Model Becomes Inspiration for Sustainable Rural Development

The success of Sukhet Panchayat demonstrates how rural communities can use local resources to create economic and environmental solutions.

The model combines:

  • Waste management.
  • Organic farming.
  • Clean energy promotion.
  • Rural employment generation.
  • Sustainable agriculture practices.

With national recognition and successful implementation, the Sukhet Model has emerged as an example for other villages looking for innovative ways to manage waste while improving livelihoods.

Bihar Village Shows How Waste Can Become a Source of Income

The transformation of Sukhet Panchayat highlights the potential of rural innovation in addressing environmental challenges. By converting cow dung and organic waste into valuable compost and linking it with LPG benefits, the village has created a model where cleanliness, income generation and sustainability work together.
