BPCL Flags Off First Extreme Weather Grade Diesel Rake from Bina Refinery for Indian Army

 Indigenous XWG Diesel offers improved cold-startability, drivability and reliability in extreme cold and high-altitude conditions, strengthening military logistics.

Bina, Madhya Pradesh: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has flagged off its first Extreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel rake from its Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant development in specialised fuel solutions for extreme weather conditions.

The fuel has been developed specifically to support operations in severe cold and high-altitude regions, where conventional diesel can face performance challenges.

The inaugural rake was flagged off by Lt Gen Mukesh Chadha, AVSM, SM, VSM, DGST, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), in the presence of Mr. Subhankar Sen, Director (Marketing), BPCL, along with senior officials from the Indian Army, Indian Railways and BPCL.

BPCL Develops Indigenous XWG Diesel for Extreme Conditions

The Extreme Weather Grade Diesel has been indigenously developed by BPCL’s Corporate Research & Development Centre (CRDC) in collaboration with the Bina Refinery.

The specialised fuel has been formulated to deliver dependable performance in challenging weather conditions, particularly in areas experiencing extremely low temperatures and high altitudes.

Its development highlights BPCL’s focus on indigenous technology, innovation and self-reliance in specialised energy solutions.

Key Features of Extreme Weather Grade Diesel

According to BPCL, the XWG Diesel incorporates features aimed at maintaining fuel performance under severe weather conditions.

Key features include:

  • Ultra-low pour point for improved performance in extremely cold conditions
  • Low Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP)
  • Improved cold-startability
  • Enhanced drivability
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Improved reliability in severe weather
  • Designed for high-altitude and extreme winter conditions

These characteristics are intended to support uninterrupted vehicle and equipment operations in difficult terrains.

XWG Diesel to Support Indian Army Logistics

The new fuel is particularly significant for military logistics and mobility in high-altitude and cold regions.

Severe weather can affect conventional fuel performance and create operational challenges. BPCL said the XWG Diesel is designed to provide greater fuel reliability in such environments.

The initiative is expected to support the operational efficiency and readiness of military logistics, particularly in challenging terrains where dependable fuel supplies are critical.

BPCL Highlights Innovation and Self-Reliance

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Subhankar Sen, Director (Marketing), BPCL, said the initiative demonstrates the company’s research capabilities and technological expertise.

He highlighted the development as an example of BPCL’s commitment to innovation, self-reliance and national development, while reaffirming the company’s focus on delivering advanced energy solutions for strategic requirements.

The development is also aligned with the broader objective of strengthening indigenous capabilities in specialised fuel technologies.

Bina Refinery Plays Key Role in Specialised Fuel Development

Mr. K.K. Das, Executive Director, BPCL Bina Refinery, credited the achievement to coordination and teamwork across various BPCL departments.

He expressed confidence that the refinery would continue to play an important role in developing specialised petroleum products that address the country’s strategic requirements.The successful dispatch demonstrates the Bina Refinery’s capability to produce specialised fuels for critical sectors.

Focus on Reliable Energy Solutions for Critical Sectors

Mr. Manoj Menon, Business Head (Industrial & Commercial Solutions), BPCL, highlighted the company’s efforts to develop specialised energy solutions for critical sectors.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining consistent and reliable fuel supplies for the Indian Armed Forces, particularly for operations in challenging environments. The XWG Diesel initiative is therefore positioned as both a technological achievement and a strategic fuel-supply solution.

First XWG Diesel Dispatch Marks Milestone for BPCL

The first XWG Diesel rake from the Bina Refinery marks a significant milestone in BPCL’s efforts to develop and supply specialised fuels for extreme operating conditions.

By combining indigenous research and refinery capabilities, the company aims to provide fuel solutions capable of meeting the demanding requirements of high-altitude and extreme winter operations.
