New Delhi: India is preparing for a major upgrade in border security as BSF operational mandate expansion plans are under consideration by the Central Government.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the government is exploring a broader role for the Border Security Force (BSF) and introducing a new concept called “territorial security” to strengthen national border protection.
Details of BSF Operational Mandate Expansion
Speaking during his visit to the India-Pakistan border in Gujarat’s Bhuj region, Amit Shah said the government is considering assigning new sectors and responsibilities to the BSF.
Key announcements include:
- Expansion of BSF’s operational jurisdiction.
- Introduction of a new territorial security framework.
- Creation of a four-layer security grid.
- Increased use of advanced technology for border surveillance.
- Strengthening infrastructure in sensitive border areas.
What Is the New Territorial Security Concept?
According to Amit Shah, India will move beyond traditional border guarding and adopt a wider security model.
The proposed system will involve:
- BSF personnel
- Local citizens
- Civil administration
- State police
- Armed forces
The goal is to create a coordinated security network capable of handling modern challenges such as infiltration, drone-based threats, smuggling, and hybrid warfare.
BSF Operational Mandate Expansion: Four-Pronged Security Grid Planned
The Home Minister revealed that the government plans to establish a quadrangular security grid.
The four pillars are:
- General public
- Civil administration
- Military forces
- Border Security Force (BSF)
This model is expected to improve intelligence sharing, local coordination, and rapid response capabilities along India’s borders.
Harami Nala and Sir Creek Security Work Nearing Completion
Amit Shah highlighted progress in securing vulnerable sections of the India-Pakistan border, particularly:
- Harami Nala
- Sir Creek region
According to the Home Minister:
- Around 70% of security enhancement work has been completed.
- The remaining work is expected to be finished within the next two years.
- The government aims to create a “leak-proof” security system in these sensitive areas.
Massive Investment in Smart Border Security
The government is investing thousands of crores of rupees in a nationwide Smart Border Security Project.
The project includes:
- Technological fencing
- Drones
- Modern surveillance cameras
- Radar systems
- Watchtowers
- Border roads
- Medical and residential facilities for personnel
Officials say the initiative will strengthen security across both the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders.
New BSF Border Outposts Inaugurated
During the Gujarat visit, Amit Shah inaugurated:
- G-7 Border Outpost
- G-13 Border Outpost
The outposts are located along the India-Pakistan border and are designed to improve monitoring and operational efficiency in difficult terrain.
